Attached printer not working in openSuse 13.1

HPLIP is installed. Also, at noted above, many of the entries in error.log resulted from experimentation. The HP driver has been installed from the outset. From the CUPS gui:

hplaserjet4050series (Idle, Accepting Jobs, Shared, Server Default)

Similarly in printers.conf posted above yesterday at 23:34.

hp-setup doesn’t run - even though there is an executable named hp in the backend directory.

What about hp-doctor suggested by hp-check? It uncovered a number of missing dependencies.

No, you’re using a postscript driver with the CUPS parallel backend. There are other drivers (filters) available for this printer. (Refer to the openprinting page I linked to in post #16 of this thread.)

BTW, the PPD file(s) in /etc/cups/ppd/ directory, are definitive of the driver being used. (The name of the .ppd file is referenced in your printers.conf file.)

hp-setup doesn’t run - even though there is an executable named hp in the backend directory.

I would like you to have tried running that backend (as I described in my last post), but I didn’t see your output posted here.

Regarding ‘hp-setup’, did you enter the root password when prompted? Any errors reported? Try

kdesu hp-setup

What about hp-doctor suggested by hp-check? It uncovered a number of missing dependencies.

Don’t worry about that for now.

Thank you.

From /etc/cups/ppd: HP4050.PPD, the multi-language version from HP.

I did not post an output from hp-setup because I could not get it to run, but it did run now. Please note that, for convenience but knowledgeable of the risks, I always run as root.

Done.

Does the fact that the parallel port is on a SIIG card in a PCI slot have something to do with this? Please again note that Yast hardware information detects the printer:

80: Parallel 00.0: 10900 Printer
  [Created at parallel.156]
  Unique ID: 6r1H.OgKnLj3GCD7

  Device: "HP LaserJet 4050 Series"
  Device File: /dev/lp1
  Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
  Attached to: #79 (Parallel controller)

I will try the Postscript driver from the page https://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_4050

Thank you for your continuing suggestions.

Just tried the other driver. A test page printed but no printing from KATE.

From CUPS:

Printer:
hp4050 (Idle, Accepting Jobs, Shared)

Job:
|hp4050-43|Unknown|Withheld|1k|1| completed at
|—|—|—|—|—|

“Unable to open print file: No such file or directory”|

Can you please run the backend as I requested. I just want to know if the ‘hp’ backend finds the printer. Just open a terminal and do

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

BTW, your output shows that you’re still using the foomatic driver (as opposed to the hpcups driver.)

yes, I changed to the foomatic from the hp driver.

the command yields:

direct hp “Unknown” “HP Printer (HPLIP)”

At this juncture, I’m seriously considering starting with a fresh install of 13.1

Again, thanks for you time.

Okay. AFAIK, successful detection is pre-requisite to hp-setup being able to successfully configure the printer. See the following (‘Parallel’ section):

http://bomgardner.net/hp/hplip/troubleshooting.html

Here’s a graphical representation of how it all works:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/128

However, at this stage I’m not not sure why there is an issue with KDE printing.

At this juncture, I’m seriously considering starting with a fresh install of 13.1

I don’t think that will help at all.

Again, thanks for you time.

My pleasure.

Thanks. One quirk I notice is that when I try to reinstall the printer through Yast, it sets the port at lp0, not lp1. I have to go into printers.conf to correct it.

I will study the references you provided and see what can be done next.

Try reconfiguring (via CUPS web interface or yast) with the following HPLIP driver: ‘HP LaserJet 4000 Series pcl3, hpcups 3.14.4’

I’ve got an HP 4510 - pretty much the same animal you have. Typically, I
set the printer up using the HP device manager but this printer - for
whatever reason - has never been found by the manager doing an open scan.
I’m using the wireless on the printer and I frequently find that it has
gotten lost. I can ping it but it is still not discovered. If I have
problems setting it up, I first configure the wireless on the printer to use
a fixed IP then enter that into the manual discover page in the HP manager.
It is then found and I’m set until I need to configure another machine (or
reset the printer wireless).

I have no such problems with a couple of other HP All-in-one printer models
nor do I have any problem with discovery on my 32-bit laptop but it’s a PITA
with all the 64-bit machines.

BTW, the 4510 seems to be found just fine if I connect it with a USB cable.

Hi Will

The OP is using a parallel-connected printer.

Will, thanks for your comment. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but my printer will not have an IP address distinct from the pc and therefore can only be accessed by the path (parallel:/dev/lp1).

Apologies for missing your configuration. You are correct; the wired
connection has no knowledge of IP related info. You did, however, arouse my
curiosity and the HP 4500 Officejet I have doesn’t have a parallel port on
it - not even a blank space for one. It’s been quite a while since I last
used that huge Centronics connector so I guess I assigned them to the box
with the vacuum tubes and discrete transistors

Will Honea

I probably mentioned a few posts back that the printer is running off a SIIG pci card that provides a parallel port. This printer is a workhorse and is still going strong.

Because I am planning to run VirtualBox on the machine with the printer, and in light of a other issues I had with the install (display, etc.), I reinstalled the OS this morning. After the initial updates and before loading any other programs or changing the stock configuration, I loaded hplip and ran hp-check -t as well as /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp, and the results are unchanged, as predicted by Deano Ferrari.

linux-5:~ # /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp “Unknown” “HP Printer (HPLIP)”
linux-5:~ #

Here is the end of the hp-check report:

Run 'hp-doctor' command to prompt and fix the issues.

Done.

Yesterday, I did add many of the missing packages but to no avail. I looked at the two sources, thanks, and they provide a lot of information, but I am not certain what I should try next.

Try using

kdesu hp-setup /dev/parport0

*You may need to check which device nodes exist first with

ls -l /dev/parport*

If that doesn’t work, I’d suggest you try to get support from HPLIP

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html

Checks of parport0 and partport1 do not detect a printer.

I posted a query on the HPLIP site:

https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/247789

Thanks.

I’m following your progress with interest.
