Apparently I have installed the driver correctly (the quick install) and well it’s now default resolution is 1280x1024; which is cool I guess but not for my monitor, my monitor doesn’t support. It does, but it’s extremely blurry and I do not want it there anyways. So I go into Sax2 to change it to 1024x768 and it just won’t change. It says test, so I test and it doesn’t test. I just ignore and save (because I know the monitor and card support 1024x768) and it doesn’t save. I restart X CTRL+ALT+Backspace and it doesn’t change. I tried to do ‘aticonfig --resolution=Screen0,1024x768’ and I get an error of (Error: Section # expected)
“Cannot deactivate all displays – At least one display must be active” is an error I get when opening Sax2
Have a look in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the ‘Section “Monitor”’.
Each monitor (there can be multiple entries) will have an option PreferredMode. You could try setting 1024x768 there and than restart X to see if it holds.
Another option is to boot into runlevel 3 and retry the sax2 configuration (so that will be the only X session getting started). That sometimes works better then trying to configure when already in X.
If this does not work you can post the xorg.conf so we can have a closer look.
During the sax2 commands used to actually apply the installed drivers I experienced a similar problem last night. It took my about a half hour to figure out that a default VESA monitor had been chosen. Once I properly selected my monitor (well, something close - mine is a Viewsonic V900 which wasn’t on the list - I picked V800) everything is good.
The problem can easily be solved by using en.opensuse.org/ATI > The Hard Way > (Note: I didn’t install latest and greatest drivers, I just instead skipped to configuring the card)
Yes. When I used the hard way, everything looked great for sax2 -r -m 0=radeon. Then things went south for sax2 -r -m 0=frglx (spelling on the glx part may be incorrect - verify at the quoted website) because I didn’t notice that the default VESA monitor was selected.
Glad things are sorted out - though I guess I didn’t need to tell the world about my bonehead with the VESA monitor after all, huh?
