ATi Radeon HD 4650 AGP Issues

I have posted this previously on the Ubuntu forums with no help… because I’m having the same issue on both Linux distributions, OpenSuSE 11.2 and Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (Both x86_64). The issue happens on Linux only, Doesn’t have a problem on Win7 x64.

So I’m just gonna copy what I said there.

I have searched, and searched, and searched, to try and find a fix to this… All the remedy’s I could find, didn’t do squat. Lol

I just recently got a 4650 Radeon HD for my Desktop, in replacement of my NVIDIA GeForce 6200LE.

I am a BIG Dual Monitor user, and I got my dual monitors to work just fine in Linux… out of clone mode, etc. With only one issue…

Each time I open something like…

  • winecfg
  • sometimes Pidgin or Empathy (Only on Ubuntu)
  • Catalyst Control Center (Only on Ubuntu)

My right screen flickers for about 5 seconds… slowing the whole machine down… and is fine the rest of the time until I open another app that does it.

It seems to do it with any WINE app. and it’s very annoying, sometimes even locks my system up.

Is there a way to fix this?

I have tried this on Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Kubuntu, and Fedora, with no luck.

System Specs:
Desktop: Intel Celeron D 3.33GHz, ATi Radeon HD 4650 AGP, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDDx2, 1TB HDD, Windows 7 Ultimate, Ubuntu, OpenSuSE- All 64 BIT

You mean it’s OK until you use certain applications in, with or related to Wine?
You didn’t say Pidgin or other were an issue in openSUSE.

We assume you have installed a driver for the card. Please just confirm it’s AGP!?

They aren’t an issue with SuSE.

I just noticed that it was doing it as I logged in too.

So I doubt it’s JUST WINE.

It did it when I logged into IceWM, XFCE, GNOME, and KDE.

Did all of them to make sure it wasn’t just one of them.

I didn’t notice it on Ubuntu. I only noticed the Login issue on SUSE.

and Yes…

It IS AGP.

I installed the latest proprietary drivers from ATi relating to my Video Card.

I’m no ATI guru, but there are some, so wait and see
