ATI Radeon 7200

I cant get compiz to work, am I right to think my card is supported? I’ve searched and seen others have it working but can not get mine up and going. so if someone could provide some help maybe some commands to try to see if things are installed right I’m a new to linux so any help would be great. And I have read some tutorials on this but nothing working for me.

What version OpenSuSE?

Which desktop ( Gnome/KDE/Xfce )?

Have you got the ATI drivers installed and have 3d Accel?

have you got “coposite” enabled in your xorg.conf?

Right at the very end there should be an entry:

<<snip>>

Section “Extensions”
Option “Composite” “on”
EndSection

<<pins>>

Is it compiz or kwin you are after

Bit more info required before anyone can even make a guess.

Sorry it took a while for me to get back to you my girl just had our baby boy!.. But I’m running SUSE 11.1 and trying to get compiz to work. I have 3d accel enabled and I have changed my xorg.conf to read

Section “Extensions”
Option “Composite” “on”
EndSection

but whenever I got to enable my 3d Desktop a pop up says Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway? and I click no as I don’t want to screw anything up…Where I believe I’m going wrong is with my drivers I have the default driver SUSE installed for my card I don’t know if that one will work and if not where do I get the correct one?

> baby boy!..

congrats…

on the effects problem: you need to answer the questions baskitcaise
gave you…have you installed the ATI driver, for example? (see his
post) because the answers you give will allow him (or others) to help
you…

First off thanks for the congrats… And I thought thats what I said but maybe I didn’t say it right. The driver I have installed is the default driver SUSE installed on installation I have not installed any other drivers for my card as I am not sure what driver or where to get what I need.

welcome…(my baby is 39)

okay, let us try again! here are four questions and what we have
learned after THREE posts asking:

Q: What version OpenSuSE?
A: “SUSE 11.1” in second post…guess we assume you meant openSUSE

Q: Have you got the ATI drivers installed and have 3d Accel?
A: No ATI driver, and Yes to 3d accel enabled (second post)

Q: have you got “coposite” enabled in your xorg.conf?
A: Yes (second post)

Q: Which desktop ( Gnome/KDE/Xfce )?
A: [still unknown]

Q: Is it compiz or kwin you are after?
A: [still unknown]

you can google this search string

site:opensuse.org install ATI driver

(note how to restrict the search to this site, so you don’t get
thousands of Ubuntu answers!) to find:

http://en.opensuse.org/Howto/ATI_Driver
http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/411021-new-linux-how-install-ati-driver.html

by the way, i can’t find any “ATI Radeon 7200” card on
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
i guess that is a pretty old card…it may not be strong enough for
desktop effects…i do NOT know…

you can find lots of talk about it all the way back to SuSE 9.x, see:
http://www.google.dk/search?q=site:opensuse.org+“ATI+Radeon+7200”

if forced to buy a new card or accept no desktop effects, consider
this: my nVidia easily does desktop effects…but WHY waste the
resources on spinning cubes?

if you do buy a newer card, i’d suggest that currently nVidia is the
most Linux friendly…ymmv
