ati radeon 5670 fglrx problem with opensuse 11.2 (x64)

Hello,
I have a problem with the Radeon 5670 and the fglrx driver in opensuse11.2.

I’ve created a rpm from the newest ati*x86_64.run (catalyst10.2, witch should support the radeon 5600 series) and installed it following the “ATI-the hard way” instructions.

Here is the resulting Xorg.0.log:

“PCI bus 1 card 5 func 0” seems to be the Onboard-Graphics (Radeon 3200)

and “PCI bus 2 card 0 func 0” i think is the Radeon5670 set as primary graphics adapter in the BIOS

what have I done wrong?

Thanks in advance

did you try to build that from run level 5 ? If so, what happens if you build it from run level 3 ?

building from console says “installation complete!”, no errors

installing with zypper shows some warnings during the make process but no errors. (shown as additional rpm output)

here is the zypper output:

You should not build this from run level 5, errors or no errors obvious in the build.

Also, can you provide output of:

rpm -qa '*kernel*'

Also, please confirm you have the YaST Software Management pattern “base development” installed.

I built again from run level 3
the yast patterns “base developement”, "c/c++ devel"and “linux kernel devel” are installed.

the rpm -qa kernel output is

kernel-xen-devel-2.6.31.12-0.1.1.x86_64
kernel-source-2.6.31.12-0.1.1.noarch

but there is something strange:

at the moment I’m running with vesa drivers and
the xorg.conf (created with sax2 -r -m 0=vesa) has this entry

Section "Device"
BoardName "ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics"
  BusID "1:5:0"
  Driver "vesa"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  VendorName "ATI"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  .
  ...
  Device "Device[0]"
  Identifier "Screen[0]"
  Monitor "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

BusID and Board Name in the xorg.conf are pointing to the Onboard-Graphics
but the Monitor is connected to the PCIe Radeon 5670.

Does the drivers have problems finding the right vga-adapters?
(I can’t deactivate the onboard-graphics in the BIOS
I can only set “primary graphics-adapter” to “PCIe” or onboard").

it works!

I had to take the card out of the system and reset the BIOS…

Although the bios-settings are the same as before
The vga-card now has another BusID and works fine!

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience,
simon

Congratulations and well done!!

In case you decide to do further “tuning”, there is some practical theory here in this linked thread below, where in particular post#1 and post#11 are relevant to both your on-board and PCI-e card graphics: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums

If you need further assistance and start a new thread, please be certain to explain that your PC has two graphic devices, as that information will possibly result in your receiving better recommendations.

the solution is often very simple … if you know whats the problem

thanks for the Graphic Card Guide, now it’s much clearer
