ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 with opensuse 11.2 64bit

Hi everyone.
I have installed opensuse 11.2 64bit on my sony-vaio vgn-CR353, with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphic card.
I have a problem with its driver…
when I run sax2, its detect the grapich card, but I can’t use any special effect & activate that on Desktop effect, so I’can’t activate/use compiz too.
I’ve tried many way after read articles in this forum, but there nothing that can resolve this problem…
I used to installed opensuse 11.1, if I use ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run, or use fglrx driver that I installed from yast,… I can run compiz… but it’s different in opensuse 11.2…

I’have tried to install ati-driver-installer-10-2-x86.x86_64.run, but when ati catalist running, there is a message
"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.

No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig."…

and, if I type aticonfig command on terminal, it shows “aticonfig: No supported adapters detected”

and if I test glxgears from terminal, it shows
"X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 15
Current serial number in output stream: 15
"
any one can help me & give suggestion or anything information to solve my problem??? thx be4 for your reply… sorry if my english so poor…:)

openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums

I think your ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphic card is considered a legacy card? If so, please read the link caf4926 provided in post#1: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums post#1

and post#11 : openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums post#11

Some users have found that by following the guidance in post#11 (followed by specifying radeon or radeonhd as noted in post#1) they had success with legacy ati hardware and the “radeon” or “radeonhd” drivers.

I think, it’s the answer about why my ati catalist didn’t detect the graphic card… nice post…

thx for the reply…
I’ve tried it, but when yast is installing it, there is a message show tell me that packages are broken…

But I’ll try it again soon…, and if my problem still not solved, maybe I’ll install 32bit version of opensuse 11.2…

… this suggests to me you have other problems or that possibly the installation was not done appropriately?

Can you provide a digital camera pix illustrating exactly what you were trying, and the error message you got ? I typically keep a digital camera by my desktop when doing an installation, recording my progress each step of the way. Once successful I delete all images, but if things fail at any point, I have a handy digital reference recording what I have done (in some cases wrong).

ok… I’ll try again…

I’ve tried it,… and i think it was successfull.

But, I still can’t enable desktop effects to run compiz…
how about configuration in xorg.conf??? is that configuration make negative impact, so i can’t enable desktop effects ??
this is the configuration…

I note you have the radeonhd driver installed.

Can you provide the output (post here) of running:

rpm -qa '*Mesa*'
rpm -qa '*driver*'

Further to the above, are you a Gnome or KDE user? … and how many monitors are you using? If a Gnome user, or if using more than one monitor, I do not believe I can help (as I have no experience there).

I’m a Gnome User,and use only one monitor… :expressionless:

These are the output…

Yap… Although I’m not get the true solution for my problem yet, but I think You have give me many new knowledge. thx

A couple of things.

(1) while you updated Mesa, you failed to update xorg-x11 versions. Take a look at the repository here: Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.2/x86_64 and compare those versions to the versions you quoted (see red above). Clearly you did not update. Possibly you were mislead by some inappropriate yast message stating the update was done, when it was not. You NEED to update those. ok ?

Do you need help in using yast to update software?

(2) why did you install all those debuginfo apps ? Do you know how to use those? I surely do not. If you do not know how to use them, and if they are not installed by default, and if someone did not ask you to install them, then I do not understand the purpose to install them.

ok… I’ll update that…
I think i need help to update it
but after I compare with the index at the repository, I found only this package that not update :

xorg-x11-driver-input-7.4-39.1.x86_64
xorg-x11-driver-input-debugsource-7.4-108.1.x86_64
xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd-1.3.0_20091026_8b89b9-1.1.1.x86_64
xorg-x11-driver-video-debuginfo-7.4-249.1.x86_64
xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-87.88.1.x86_64

should I download it manually?? I’ve tried to add this repository on yast, but not successfull…

hehe… yup. I surely do not. Should I uninstall them?

Note the repositories (any repository) typically does NOT contain the architecture of the PC. … hence the repos to add is:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.2/

I do not know if having that “/” at the end is needed, or if it should be removed.

If it were me taking over your PC, I would uninstall them.

I’ve updated the driver…, and

linux-hac3:~ # glxgears
can running. but I still can’t enabling desktop effect… any idea???
I don’t know what should I do now… :frowning:

I can NOT help you with Gnome desktop effects … I’m a KDE user. A Gnome user will have to “chime in” here (or you can simply drop Gnome and become a KDE user  ).

Reference your update, last time you thought you had updated, and you had not. You are certain the rpms were updated this time? Did you compare the rpms after typing:

rpm -qa '*Mesa*'
rpm -qa '*driver*'

to ensure the updated rpms were in place ?

maybe, I’ll try again to reinstall the driver for the last. if I still can’t enabling the desktop effect, I’ll migrate to Gnome 32bit. but if I still found the same trouble, I think it’s right decision to migrate to KDE 64 bit  Thank you for your help. I hope you can help me next time, especially when I’ve used KDE.lol!

What you could do is start a new thread and state in the Title:
**Gnome can’t enable spec desktop effects - ATI X2300 SUSE-11.2 64-bit
**

and maybe you will catch the eye of a Gnome user that way.
