ATI drivers only work as root or super user

I just installed the ati drivers from the repository and when running under root or su I get the proper output from the command “fglrxinfo”

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7769 Release

however when I run the same command as a normal user I get this

fglrxinfo: xcb_io.c:352: _XReply: Assertion `!dpy->xcb->reply_data' failed.
Aborted

also in the sax2 utility it correctly identifies my ATI card

now sometimes I get the same output when running xine and it crashes
