ATI Drivers in OpenSuse 12.1

Hi Guys,

I was a Ubuntu user but I really dislike Unity and Gnome shell so I had done some reading of reviews on OpenSuse 12.1 and it had been all positive. So I thought lets give it a shot. I had planned to install KDE 3 after getting drivers setup etc. I downloaded the Gnome LiveCD and installed it, updated and installed the ATI drivers… What a headache I have spent 2 days trying to get it to work without any success. I have tried all the suggestions on these forum and the wiki including the script someone developed for installing these drivers.

All the happens when I have the drivers installed booting normally is that both monitors turn off and the PC reboots.

I have successfully installed Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware, Arch Linux etc on this PC so the issue is differently OpenSuse. Does anyone have a solution/suggestion etc?

Thanks in advanced.

Gnome Live CD is not fully featured suse, AFAIR updates are not possible. And you absolutely NEED kernel sources and some devel packages installed to run fglrx.
Are they installed? if not try installing suse from DVD and select gnome desktop there.

What card are you using? Do you have dual monitor setup? Eyefinity or something like that? Did you try disconnecting one of the monitors?
Also try suse 11.4 , maybe it’s a problem with 12.1.

Normally, installation of fglrx takes about 5 minutes… something is really wrong…

Hi

I installed the KDE version of the live CD and the ATI drivers worked fine. So seems to be a issue with Gnome 3

Gnome3 is having problems with fglrx since the beginning.
Although it should be at least partially working since september.

I installed openSUSE 12.1 from the x86_64 DVD with gnome3 desktop. The driver installed initially was Gallium 0.4 which seemed to function properly. I tried to install the fglrx driver first from the repository and then manually using the download from AMD/ATI support site. The desktop did not load in either instance. When I used the repository for install the splash page for login came up but never loaded completely but I was able to get a console to run. When I installed using the script from AMD support the system hung on reboot and would not even let me pull up cli. Home built computer with RS780 AMD chipset Radeon HD 3300 graphics. AMD phenom x4 9650 cpu Gigabyte MB 4gb ram. multiboot w/ubuntu, mint, opensuse and win7u. I run gnome3 on ubuntu and the fglrx drivers work. I intend to try to determine if the display manager may be the problem. More later if I find anything worth sharing.

I do not think this is just a display manager problem, look at my post here: Opensuse 12.1 Issues with Ati Catalyst and GDM
