I finally realized, after reading through here, that why my nvidia 8600 setup crapped out after working soo nicely for a long time was because I took a kernel update, therefore the nvidia driver and kernel didn’t match.
My question is:
If I purchase an ATI card, like a 4850, will I have to match kernel/driver as well for it to work properly?
I had everything running beautifully (1600x1050), until I took an update and then I was not able to use my DVI connector, so I connected my vga connector and the display has been crappy ever since.
Trying to figure out what vid card will work nicely, even after updates to the kernel.
I have, sadly, tried a couple of times to no avail.
I am looking at reformatting, reinstalling the OS, and taking all updates, then installing nvidia 173.x.x.x driver through YAST. That seems to be the only option left.
Hi
I would recommend the nvidia download rather than the repository to
start with. The other though was did you try changing the DVI port it
was using? I run twin monitors, when booting only one works until gdm
starts.
Hmmm the other thought your monitor has DVI/VGA inputs? If so
you didn’t bump the button that switches this?

To install the dependencies, go to Yast / Software Management. Then where it says “Filter” choose “Patterns”. Then, in the list of package groups, you will see “Linux Kernel Development”. Check the box, and several other things will be selected automatically.
Install all that stuff (around 400 mb’s) worth. Now try running the installer and it should work.
I’m assuming you already know how to run the installer, by exiting the x-server and typing the file name, etc.
While you’re in Yast, you may want to uninstall your old Nvidia drivers to prevent any kind of conflict.
Hi
Mine (8600) has twin DVI. What about the Monitor? I found that they
default to the vga, then you need to press the button when booting to
get the monitor to switch to DVI. Not sure if there is a BIOS setting
for the default slot, may be worth a check to see if changing that
helps.

Hi
And you setup the size of the Monitor in SaX as well?
Now FYI, my SLED10 machine runs the 8600 with the 173.14.12 drivers fine
and I’m running two Viewsonic VX1940w at 1680x1050 each (3360x1050).
