ATI driver question

Hi all,

I was wondering about something.

I finally realized, after reading through here, that why my nvidia 8600 setup crapped out after working soo nicely for a long time was because I took a kernel update, therefore the nvidia driver and kernel didn’t match.

My question is:

If I purchase an ATI card, like a 4850, will I have to match kernel/driver as well for it to work properly?

Thanks

Heeter

Hi
Yup, same deal. Suggest you stick with nvidia  What’s wrong with the
8600? I have one (but the silent version) on my SLED10 machine, runs
great

Thanks for the reply.

I had everything running beautifully (1600x1050), until I took an update and then I was not able to use my DVI connector, so I connected my vga connector and the display has been crappy ever since.

Trying to figure out what vid card will work nicely, even after updates to the kernel.

Hi
If your using the proprietary drivers, you should just need to run the
nvidia installer again?

If not, I suggest you change to them as the repo updates are sometimes
out of sync…

Thanks for the reply malcomlewis.

I have, sadly, tried a couple of times to no avail.

I am looking at reformatting, reinstalling the OS, and taking all updates, then installing nvidia 173.x.x.x driver through YAST. That seems to be the only option left.

Thanks ML,

Heeter

The installer is probably not working because of missing dependencies needed for it to run properly.

How do I check for that, foresthill?

Thanks, FH

Hi
I would recommend the nvidia download rather than the repository to
start with. The other though was did you try changing the DVI port it
was using? I run twin monitors, when booting only one works until gdm
starts.

Hmmm the other thought your monitor has DVI/VGA inputs? If so
you didn’t bump the button that switches this?

Hi,

well in DVI mode, the best I got was 640x480, then I moved to vga and got the res up to 12x10, but it is very hard to look at.

I have one dvi port and one vga port on the 8600GT

To install the dependencies, go to Yast / Software Management. Then where it says “Filter” choose “Patterns”. Then, in the list of package groups, you will see “Linux Kernel Development”. Check the box, and several other things will be selected automatically.

Install all that stuff (around 400 mb’s) worth. Now try running the installer and it should work.

I’m assuming you already know how to run the installer, by exiting the x-server and typing the file name, etc.

While you’re in Yast, you may want to uninstall your old Nvidia drivers to prevent any kind of conflict.

Thanks a million, Foresthill,

I will do that right away,

This sounds like the right repair for me,

I am excited already…

Thanks again, Foresthill

Hi
Mine (8600) has twin DVI. What about the Monitor? I found that they
default to the vga, then you need to press the button when booting to
get the monitor to switch to DVI. Not sure if there is a BIOS setting
for the default slot, may be worth a check to see if changing that
helps.

My Monitor autodetects the port.

I just reboot the monitor and whatever port is plugged in, the monitor starts up on that connection.

Hi

Would you be able to let me know how to install the nvidia drivers?

I downloaded them from the unix download portal page, but forgot how to install them manually,

Thanks

Heeter

Hi
Maybe I need to create a canned response for this one

Download the driver for your arch from;
Nvidia Unix Drivers

If you don’t have the kernel source etc installed then;

sudo zypper in kernel-source kernel-syms
sudo zypper in -t pattern devel_basis devel_C_C++

Press ctrl+alt+F1 and login as your user

su -
init 3

cd to the Nvidia Unix Driver you downloaded

sh NV*.run -q
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
init 5 && exit
ctrl+alt+F1
exit
ctrl+alt+F7

The ctrl+alt+F7 gets you back to the GUI (X session).

Now after a kernel update, you don’t need to run the sax2 command, just
the others to get to run level 3, rebuild the driver and exit.

Hey awesome, thanks for the help.

I managed to install the drivers. Now I have 178.14.12 (177.80)

I did the kernel update as well.

Anyways, now I am looking at 640x480 again.

What else to I have to do?

Thanks a million for all your help guys so far.

Heeter

Hi
And you setup the size of the Monitor in SaX as well?
Now FYI, my SLED10 machine runs the 8600 with the 173.14.12 drivers fine
and I’m running two Viewsonic VX1940w at 1680x1050 each (3360x1050).

Yes the monitor size is showing 1680x1050 in sax2.

In the nvidia configuration screen it is 640 x 480

Heeter

Hi
FYI, the 177.80 drivers have now been released
