ATI 3D accel fail, swrast win?

I booted the 11.3 live cd (KDE) and it worked great, so I installed openSUSE. After installation my video acted funny - the screen would occasionally blank when I opened a window, moved or resized a window, etc. It’s as if the video driver decided to redraw the entire screen. So I rebooted the live CD to see what was different and noticed this:

Working Live CD

Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
Model: Radeon XPRESS 200 5A41 (PCIE)
2D driver: radeon
3D driver: swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.8.2))

Crappy Full Install

Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
Model: Radeon XPRESS 200 5A41 (PCIE)
2D driver: radeon
3D driver: R300 classic (7.8.2)

So it seems the 3D driver is an issue. Is there a way I can tell SUSE to just use the swrast 3D driver?

There are two threads showing how to build a proper proprietary driver (AMD GPUs) in 11.3 GM (I kicked off one of them), as long as your desktop/portable GPU is new enough to be supported by it (and your Xpress 200M fits the parameters).

The script I personally tested in 11.3 GM x64, therefore, it is bitness-neutral.
