I have a Radeon ATI 3870 and am having some trouble.
OpenSuse detected the card fine and i installed the latest driver from ATI via the terminal usual means.
When i try to access SAX2 from YAST now i get:
Cannot deactivate all displays. At least one display must be active.
When i actually get into SAX2, it displays the card as:
ATI ATI Radeon HD 3870 (RV670 9501). 3D Accel is greyed out and not checked.
I cannot access SAX2 from the terminal. It just hangs there.
I am guessing this is why COmpiz is not working either?
Any ideas?
I should also add when i am in SAX2 and i try to save this config, i get the following:
SaX library Success: X configuration. Data incomplete in file /var/lib/sax/xorg.conf Undefined Screen “” referenced by ServerLayout “(null)”.
Not sure where to go next.
Lastly, here is my xorg:

ok i’m learning as i go here. The hardware list info in YAST says i am using flgrx and not radeonHD which i think is a good thing.
But SAX2 is still messed up and i still dont have DRI. Which i guess is what is needed for 3D and eventual Compiz?
I got this from Wiki:
“For proper Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) support, the kernel source code for the currently running kernel must be installed and compiled. The driver can work without the kernel module, but DRI will not be available.”
I guess this is where i am?

I had the same problem with my HD 2400 Pro…
You could try this:
install openSUSE
update openSUSE
download (from AMD/ATI website) & install ATI display driver
init 3 (as root)
sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx
