I am fighting a very strange issue while trying to switch from an NVidia card to an ASUS EAH3450 on my existing system. I have a 1080 TV connected directly to the HDMI output. I tried the driver version 9.4 from ati.amd.com or adding the www.ati.com /suse/10.3 repo to yast. Same difference.
Everything seems to install but when X starts the screen goes black. The system is fully operational. The keyboard lights work. Ctrl-Alt-Backspc does nothing. At this point I also cannot switch to tty2 or any other term.
The system is still running. I can access the smb, apache and ftp servers. I can also connect with NX and NoMachine
I also tried “sax2 -r -m 0=vesa” from run level 3. The configuration is successful but the xserver crashed with font issues after the reboot. This is all very weird because the NVidia card worked just fine with 3D support.
I did. Or what is applicable. The driver install is not automatic. The installer.sh is no longer available.
zypper in kernel-source gcc make
This reports that there is nothing to do. All there.
installer.sh
I now run the automatic installer from the amd site. I use the 9.4 driver version. The install is not reporting any error. The displayed information during the install:
More from the xlog. Here some font issues. Could that be the problem?

If you d/load the propriety driver from ATI/AMD you do not need to use sax2,
after the aticonfig just reboot and when/if you get to the desktop use
amdcccle to get a graphical catalyst driver config.
