Atheros Wireless Adapter Not Working on Compaq Presario C700

I have an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g WiFi Adapter.

I use OpenSuse 11.3, KDE desktop.

When I did iwconfig, it displayed the following:

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:“sami”
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:776D-1A2V-A2X3-23AB-H690-L131-P4 (not the original one)
Power Management:off

When I try to connect to the “sami” network, it displays “configuring interface”, and after a few seconds I am prompted with a window "secrets for ‘sami’ ", and I have to press ok to confirm the encryption code. It doesn’t connect to the network, as I am prompted with the same window after 30 seconds. I confirm it again, but it still refuses to connect. The tray icon eventually shows “not available”. (Btw, I have a password phrase that I must introduce, not an ASCII/ HEX, as it says. When I change to “passphrase” instead of ASCII/HEX and introduce the text, it doesn’t work either.) Is it because it doesn’t find the Access Point?

Sorry, I’m a beginner and I hope I won’t bore you with this. But I’ve read some threads and haven’t seen my problem there. Any advice would be useful for me! Thank you!

Have look thru this
Getting Your Wireless to Work

If that network uses WEP encryption, you will need to get the HEX key from the
AP. It is extremely unlikely that a phrase will work in that case. If you want
to know why, it has been explained several times in this forum.

If the encryption is WPA/WPA2, then the phrase is the one to use. For this case,
your symptoms are what would be expected if you have not set up the first
connection using the Connection Manager. That is the step that creates the
wallet to store the secret.

Ok. I’ll check on the encryption and see what can be done. Thanks!

It doesn’t seem to work by WPA/ WPA2, though I can connect in Windows Vista by supplying the passphrase.

I did dmesg and it displayed:

Reason 3 means wrong secret. You don’t have it right, or you have not set up the
Connection Manager correctly. If you are sure it is correct, including case,
then create a new account and log into it. From the applet is the lower-right
hand corner, select “Manage Connections” and create a new wireless connection.
After you get the wireless secret entered, the system should ask you if you want
to use the wallet to control the connection. If you say no, it will NEVER work!!!

Thanks, lwfinger! I worked it out following your advice!
