I would like to know if the drivers for Atheros AR2417 is included in the kernels for openSUSE v11. Thanks!
The driver is ath5k which is in the kernel. However, with opensuse 11, many atheros WLANs including mine (AR242x, 5000EG chipset) did not work even with madwifi. This is because there were bugs in ath5k in kernel 2.6.26. With opensuse 11.1 and kernel 2.6.27, my card now works out of the box using ath5k.
You might want to google kernel 2.6.28 and AR2417. Some bug fixes are mentioned with respect to this particular card. From the standpoint of Atheros WLANs, it is better to install opensuse 11.1 instead of 11. If your card still does not work, you can try upgrading to kernel 2.6.28 via the opensuse factory.
You could also implement compat-wireless from
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download. That will get you the wireless
drivers from what will become 2.6.30.
