AT&T DSL - not connecting with KDE 11.2

I installed KDE on a machine that also runs Vista. We used to have a partial T-1 line with router that ran fine with both OS, but we had to drop the T-1 and go with AT&T DSL, which runs fine with Vista, but won’t connect with KDE. I have searched this forum, and others, but nothing seems to work. I also used the ‘swerdna’ fix, suggested on these pages a while back, but that also didn’t work. Of course, AT&T offers no support for Linux. Any help would be appreciated. We went to Linux because we were having chronic problems with the Vista system, and would rather not have it at all.
Thanks.

One more thing: I don’t want anyone to misunderstand from my previous post, but we really like KDE. I wish we had discovered it earlier; it would have saved us a lot of Vista pain.

how is this connection made with the at&t dsl???
Is there and internal dsl modem? or is this a small stand alone dsl modem?
I have at&t dsl and have no trouble connecting with it.

It’s a Motorola modem. The Vista OS connects with it, but the KDE does not. This is with a newly installed KDE with all the defaults. As I said in my first post, I tried tinkering with the settings, but nothing worked. If you have a similar system, can you tell me how you have the Network Manager set up?
Thanks.

Is this an always on modem, does it connect to your machine via ethernet
cable?

Or could you supple the model of the modem so I can look at the specs
please?

Thanks for the response. This is an ‘always on’ modem, Motorola model 3347-02-1022.

One other thing: It’s connected via ethernet cable. The modem has wireless capability, (at least it has an antenna), but my desktops don’t.

I figured it out. If anyone wants to know how, I can post it tomorrow when I’m back at work.
Thanks.

Background: We had 2 desktops connected by ethernet to a router that was hooked up to a T-1 line in the space we lease in our building. The building owner decided he was no longer going to supply the T-1, so we had to go with AT&T DSL, which was the only choice we had. One of the desktops we use is an old HP with XP, the other one a new Gateway 64 bit with Vista. We had had big problems with the Gateway, related to Vista memory management, which Gateway could not fix; their answer was to do a complete system restore, which only lasted about 2 days before problems started again. Before tossing it, we tried KDE, which we installed with Vista on the machine, and it opened up whole new world for us. And everything worked fine with the T-1 line, also. But when we went with the AT&T DSL, was when we started to have problems. They sent us a Motorola 3347 modem, and we did the install CD on the XP machine, which worked ok. The KDE on the Gateway, however, would not load webpages. When we booted the Vista on the same machine, however, we were able to connect. We made many changes in Network Manager and Yast, but nothing seemed to work. What was really surprising was that the Network Manager said KDE was connected, and when we got into the modem’s setup screens, it also told us we were connected to the internet, yet no pages would load. Another problem was that since we couldn’t get online, we could not download any updates, drivers, etc.
We are probably not as tech savvy as 99.9% of the readers of this site, so it took almost 3 days to figure it out, but, we did it with the help of a ‘rozbarwinek’ post from 2008, which suggested the following fix:
1)open the terminal and enter:
kdesu kwrite /etc/resolv.conf
(enter password)
2)at the end of the file add:
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
(save changes)

and it worked!
Thanks to everyone.
