asus W5-a01 Webcam built-in - howto install?

greetings from a snowy cold night in Germany

I own an ASUS W5 laptop (approx 2004)
with an W5-A01 webcam built-in.

How do I install and configure it in SuSe 10.2?

by the way: Is it easy (and preferable in this case)
to update my system from suse 10.2 to 11.1 ?

Update?
NO. Best you can hope for is a re-install and keep /home
so you will need to re-install all applications, but will keep all your user files and settings.

But SuSe has strange policies concerning the past:

That is your web cam. In particular note the ID 0402:5603. Using that information, you can go here: HCL/Web Cameras - openSUSE and search the lists of web cam support for that web cam. IF you do that, you won’t find the 0402:5603 listed, which is a good hint it will be difficult to get working under Linux.

If you search on the 0402:5603 on google, you will read of a lot of failure of users trying to get this webcam to work under linux. I read of one user who claimed the uvc driver worked for them, and I read of more who claimed the uvc did not. Its possible the 1st user had a different web cam.

Eventually, I noted this page: ALi Corp M5603C - LinuxLaptopWiki
which suggests a driver “may” be under development to include in the gspca driver.

If you ever get to the stage where you believe you can test your web cam, you could look at some of the tests here:

So as I understand you’re using the webcam will not work under Linux, is that correct?

Also, I’m considering buying a new laptop for my wife (asus is quite old) and am considering buying Dell Studio 15", would webcam work on that? She mostly uses Skype, Email and Internet so it is important.
