Asus vy249hgr 1st settings

Hello,
I have a new screen monitor (asus vy249hgr using hdmi) and i’m looking at the possible settings.
I’m using standard mode so it gives me 100Hz , a switch to game mode allows to go to 120Hz.
Is 120Hz interesting outside of games ? (i’m not using games a lot) ?

How would you set brightness and contrast outside of games ?
Standard mode is 60 for brightness and 80 for contrast for now.

Is there something that can be improved ?

Graphic settings might be subjective and depends on your personal likings and needs. Nobody knows how your vision and color perception is. Nobody can give you recommended values for brightnes and contrast and others. Play with the different modes your monitor provides and take the one you prefer. If you messed up something, simply reset to the standard presets.

Yes i agree that it depends of light, taste… I 've already been playing with it and reset…
I’m curious to see if some settings used by the end users would improve mine. if you changed a setting for you i can try it and see if it fits me.

Outside of gaming you won’t need adaptive sync much. Have a read what adaptiv sync is and does.

Your graphic card needs to support it.

Unfortunately, the informations regarding the support differ widely dependend which of the many AMD websites you visit.

it says that “FreeSync via HDMI is not supported for this feature. Only DP FreeSync displays will work.”

There is only vga and hdmi on this screen, is there a way to add display port ?

AMD provides differing informations on their website.

Officially, Freesync on HDMI is supported since HDMI 2.0.

You seem to use an ancient GPU (GCN 1) which does not support FreeSync on HDMI as it is to old according to AMD. It uses HDMI 1.4a

But as said, AMD contradicts themself on their different websites. One page says HDMI is supported since invention, another says since HDMI 2.0, and another says it is not supported.

I do not use AMD/Radeon/ATI products, therefore i do not plan to dig deeper into their documentation mess…

@manchette_fr you could try switching to the amdgpu driver, likewise @mrmazda may offer some further information.

IME, the amdgpu kernel module is faster than radeon on GCN#1. To switch from radeon module to amdgpu module, include the following in the bootloader’s linu lines (in Leap: edit GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in /etc/default/grub; then regenerate /boot/grub2/grub.cfg):

radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

In a Graphics help request, provide inxi -GSaz output at a minimum, and include the command line that produced that output (as below). Lesser inxi options leave out information that may be crucial to getting good help. e.g., options Sa report kernel options in use, which may affect graphics. --vs includes inxi version. Leap’s is old, currently 5 versions behind, which may affect accuracy of its output.

This means inxi would provide more info if you install what I have installed that you do not: Mesa-demo-egl, which running inxi --recommends would report.

I don’t game, so speed here is generally a non-issue. When I want to compare, I use glmark2 in X11 before and after a configuration change as a check. 3 digit results indicate old hardware. 5 digit results are typical of NVidia users.

Your repos are duplicated. You can eliminate duplication by deciding whether to use the legacy manual control method, or the repos service, and purge one or the other. Default in new 16 installations is using the service. Deleting the old involves deleting mainly files that begin with string “repo-” in /etc/zypp/repos.d/. URLs contained, not filenames, determines what constitutes duplication.

@manchette_fr I would add rd.driver.blacklist=radeon to the kernel boot options as I still see it’s being loaded…

I tried that with Oland on TW. Not loading it accomplishes nothing apparent WRT performance, though it does save a bit of RAM. Inxi thus reports amdgpu loaded, while radeon only an alternate, inconsistent with lsmod.

OTOH, with some kernel versions, Fedora 43+ needs no cmdline options to get GCN#1 or GCN#2 to run on the amdgpu module. There it simply does.

btw : things can work or not , i happen to have read the fedora doc quickly ,and i see that each distro has its pros/cons, for example this page shows a lot that can go wrong . or not, … when yo u enter this realms you’re never sure imo :smiley:
