Asrock no sound

I can not get my sound to work I have a openSUSE 11.3 on an Asrock.
it is a driwer for 5.1 CH HD Audio (via vt1705 audio codec) is missing or not functioning. there is help to get

On an asrock what??:::
Asrock is motherboard.

A number of openSUSE-11.3 users whose PC had a VT1705 hardware audio codec have complained they could not get sound functioning with the ‘stock’ kernel/alsa version in openSUSE-11.3. I believe updating to the latest kernel may have solved this for some of them. Other’s updated their alsa version per the alsa-update guide (that I am in the process of updating): SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE

If you would like us to take a more detailed look at what might be preventing your sound from working, then we need more information. In that case, please provide the information that is recommended to be provided in our multimedia stickie: Welcome to multimedia sub-area and to make this easier for you, I will quote the relevant section from that stickie:

Buy a Soundcard. The VT Codecs does not work very well on Asrock Boards.

I checked a long time all possibilities, after some tests output works, but i cant get input (micro, line in) to work.

I bought a cheap sound card (cm83xx), that works for me.

I do not know if you noticed, but you have your sound muted !!

You need to unmute that, either in kmixer (if using kmix) or install alsamixer and unmute there.

i haw install alsamixer and set all to on but i cant turn no headphone and i still get these result

Please again provide the URL output from the diagnostic script so I can do a quality check of what you noted. ie run:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

and select the share/upload option and post here the website-address/URL where the diagnostic output is located.

i think that i got alsa to activate all including the headphone but i stile got no sound. i only got headphone .

OK, I think you need to update alsa now to see if an alsa update will help. There is guide (somewhat complex) that I wrote here explaining how to do this: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE (I just updated the guide yesterday).

Note to do that update as per the guide you will

  • update your libasound2 and all alsa apps (alsa, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, alsa-plugins … etc … ) and
  • install alsa-driver-kmp-desktop specific to your kernel.

Good luck.

it started well, a test speaker-test-Dplug: front-c2-l5-twav gave sound in headphone but no sound from CD player. and after I got a conflict from YaST and now is the sound gone again. before I try again I will question the choice of the update it seemed that it was a 32 bit and not a 64-bit update was run. I also got an error.

That is the WRONG rpm to install. If you proceed you could break things !! That is for the 2.6.34.0_12-1.1.x86_64 kernel. BUT the diagnostic script you ran for me indicated your PC has the 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop kernel.

You need to install the alsa-driver-kmp-desktop for the 2.6.34.7-0.7 kernel !!

I got the correct rpm but no sound I’ve tried with speaker test. in restarted alsa with this result
KDE found that one or more internal audio devices have been removed.
If you want KDE to forget those units permanently?
This is the list of devices, like KDE believes to be removed:
Admission: HDA NVidia (VT1708S Analog)
Output: HDA NVidia (VT1708S Analog)
and it seems that I do not have a driver for my sound card nVidia Corporation MCP61.
and a url
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9fa885f74ebf94e42b8438d237366e26f5c7b854

Select YES to that. KDE will recreate the devices as necessary.

Reference the script :

Looking at the script I note:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.24-git20110313
Library version:
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2

which suggests your update was successful.

**Still, to be certain, can you provide the output of
**

rpm -qa '*alsa*'
rpm -q libasound2

I checked the the HD-Audio-Models.txt file, and it only has the following for the VT17xx :

VIA VT17xx/VT18xx/VT20xx
========================
  auto BIOS setup (default)

The boot code ‘auto’ should be applied by default. In addition to providing the information I requested, perhaps edit your /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf file so it looks like this:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
# CvwD.v1n2PVq0Ow4:MCP61 High Definition Audio
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

Also, when testing for sound, you say you tried speaker-test ? Can you be more specific ?

Also, when testing your sound, try each of the following in a terminal, first as a regular user and then with root permissions:

  • first:
 speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
  • second, try again:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
  • third:
speaker-test -c2 -D hw:0,0 -t wav -l3
  • fourth, this next command has a volume meter at the bottom of its output with a changing number of #'s and %'s to show volume levels so run this command and tell me if the number of #'s and %'s are changing:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_*
  • fifth: and also:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

Do any of those give an indication of sound ?

Also try those with and without headphones.

Note you only need JUST 1 of those to work, to confirm your sound is functional and that the driver is working. At which time we need then to check desktop setup and/or application setup.

I added this line after changing the write permissions
#options snd-hda-intel model=auto
re-boot PC and run the sound test 123 without getting any sound
I have also run tests 4 and 5 with headphone and without with this result
#aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_*
(without hp # + | 46%)
(with hp # + | 11%)
#aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
(without hp #+ | 00%)
(with hp #+ | 00%)
i haw tried all 5test as user and as root but there is still no sound

I’m still waiting for the ouput of :

rpm -qa '*alsa*'
rpm -q libasound2

I even put it in red (above) to emphasize that I needed it.

i am sorry. here is the result

I think you should write a bug report here and that will get the SuSE-GmbH sound packager attention, who is also an alsa sound developer and hopefully they will look at this. They may have some ideas and if anyone can solve this, they can.

so follow this guide here: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE and write the bug report on openSUSE-11.3 component ‘sound’. You can use your openSUSE forums username and password when logging on to bugzilla. Attach to the bug report the /tmp/alsa-info.txt file you get from running:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload
