Looks like aspell was dead during the testing… only was fixed a few months ago by the looks.

does Leap not have any german users anymore?
Maybe ask in the German language section of these forums? I would assume they will have more experience with German language aspects.

just found out, for the second time, that KDE5 wants a full language package installed to have spell checking for a language enabled,
so I used yast to add languages to not miss anything, gives me quite to much, also help files , and this in 3 languages
wired, liked KDE4 more, why messing around with several MB packages if they are totally unneeded, (will never have a non english gui but use spell check fore 3 languages)
Not that I’m aware of – the office is still located at the Maxfeldstraße 5 in Nürnberg …

There is no need to tinker when installing these. Just use the following command:
zypper install aspell aspell-de

seems SUSE is going wit hunspell, and this works
the aspell-de package was lost for some time but got back into tumbleweed again.
so I think this is solved, it does not work any more as it did, and I need to learn it , and alo remember when I reinstall that things changed 
I never bothered and got on Tumbleweed by default:

At a first glance, one could arrive at this impression because, things such as LibreOffice and Mozilla things and Google Chrome use the Hunspell dictionaries.
But, the default Desktop for openSUSE is currently KDE Plasma, which uses Sonnet as the spellchecker. Looking Sonnet’s classes, Sonnet supports both Hunspell and GNU Aspell dictionaries.
Therefore, just because, currently, as far as Leap 15.0 is concerned, the German language GNU Aspell package is “difficult” to find, doesn’t mean that openSUSE is moving towards Hunspell, rather than the GNU Aspell, as the “default” dictionary set – it only means that, currently, openSUSE Leap 15.0 has a German language issue with the GNU Aspell dictionary …

If that’s the case then, why is the Esperanto Aspell dictionary available from the openSUSE Leap 15.0 main repository?
- In fact there are a total of 93 dictionaries in the x86_64 directory of the openSUSE Leap 15.0 main repository …
- But, the German language GNU Aspell dictionary is missing …
And, there’s a comment in one of the Bug Reports that, dictionary packages should be “noarch” …
[HR][/HR]The SUSE employee may be correct with the comment that Hunspell is the currently preferred dictionary system (which the KDE Sonnet spell checker supports anyway … ) but, that doesn’t really explain why, among all the human languages available for GNU Aspell in the openSUSE Leap 15.0 distribution « 93 in total », the German language dictionary is not ( “normally” / “easily” ) available …
BTW, if the German language dictionary were to be “normally” available, openSUSE Leap 15.0 would support 94 GNU Aspell dictionaries …
OTH, Hunspell uses the Myspell dictionaries and, there’s, AFAICS, 144 of them in the “noarch” directory …
