I noted that when I extract files from a zip archive with “extract here”
Ark changes the dates of the files to the current date, rather than keeping
the original.
Is this a bug or is there some setting that will retain the original dates?

I reported the bug. It seems that it used to do the same for tar.gz
archives.

Yes, the unzip command does it right, but as far as I know ark is a front
end to many other compression programs, so if it is using unzip for that,
then it might be easy to fix.
