you might not see this message but i tried it a while ago when leap 42,1 came out , all i know is that it happens with all the newer suses havnt tried anything older than leap 42.1,I know for a fact that the opensuse people did something/changed something with the graphics. nomodeset does nothing at all when booting up with flashdrive all i get is an infinite loop of vboxguest pci device not found , not sure why that is since im not using it in a virtual machine , i have same problem with manjaro too, but thats okay because i didnt really care for it at all, but it works with antergos, all the ubuntus , fedora, i am trying to figure out what the opensuse did to their graphics , something is not right here>:( what i need is an opensuse that has an older xorg or something
I don’t profess to have a good handle on this, but researching this/similar behaviour online has turned up some accounts describing radeon power management issues which may be at play here.
I’ve found references with some users reporting success with using the ‘radeon.runpm=0’ boot parameter (but this likely depends on the kernel version involved)
my laptop has dual graphics, a 6480g and 7400m , im not sure how the opensource driver even handles dual graphics but i dont think it does,And actually the only way i was even able to run any linuxes at all on this specific laptop is because i turned off switchable graphics to integrated graphics in bios, that totally sucks not being able to use the full power of my laptop in linux and stuck with integrated.
>:(
but surely there must be some kind of suse out there with older kernels/xorg? is it possible to download a really old suse and then turn it into leap 42.2 or tumbleweed whilst retaining the older kernel or xorg graphics via updates? i’m trying to get opensuse installed on all my laptops

No, not unless you manage to find an old iso to download, but you’ll be using an unsupported dsitro with no updates.

yes, i tried that and so many different things now, and played around enabling/disabling stuff in bios , but nothing is working for me, it is impossible to run all of the leap and tumble weed suses and manjaro on this laptop, it was made in late 2011 and so it is very old and obsolete now, and opensuse requires more newer hardware ,so i will have to get rid of it and find a better laptop with nvidia ,thanks for deciding to talk to me though.
Was it ok if you disabled either of the graphics facilities in the bios ? If it did install with just one of them enabled the next thing to sort out would be how to get both working as needed as a completely separate subject.
The reason I asked is that I have installed on my machine a couple of times. It has 2 graphic cards - one hdmi and one conventional one, It’s always picked the conventional one - as I never use the hdmi on it that doesn’t matter. There have also been some changes in this area. From a comment I read. It seems that the only place where a dpi can be set for a screen is in sddm the log in manager. That seems to be a significant change to me. The other aspect is that I use kde and if I go to monitor in it’s settings there is no signs of the hdmi output. If there was for use on a TV for instance I would have to set a different resolution for it.
It could be early days in this particular area and as a result wont be fully sorted out.
