Are openSUSE mirrors safe?

I am running Tumbleweed on my old laptop because I cannot install Leap on it (it is a 32 bit machine). However I find TW updates very slow 200-700Kb/s (my internetional connection is 150Mbps). Even downloading the TW DVD from download.opensuse.org is slow. However downloading the DVD iso from opensuse.mirror.garr.it I hit 10mb/s.

I wonder how safe it is to replace permanently download.opensuse.org with **opensuse.**mirror.garr.it and us it as repo domain for all the 4 main repos? Is that recommended at all or are mirrors to be used only as a temporary exception?

Here is a list of mirrors, you have to scroll to the directory.
http://mirrors.opensuse.org/list/factory.html

Thanks but that’s not the question. And btw this list seems not up to date. For example the mirror NetBG Communications is not maintained for years (I know because a friend of mine maintained it).

download.opensuse.org is a redirector to a mirror near by you.
This mirror might be slow.
So you should try a new one.

There are so many servers in that list, so you have to decide, which one to pick.

Hm. Are you saying that at all times I am using one of the mirrors and not some official server (which would mean the OP is answered) and I should “hard-code” the one to use basedo on speed?

That are “official” Servers.

You can use one of them.

Thanks for explaning!

No one has said that. Well, firstly speed is what it is but that’s at a particular instant or period and there is no guarantee that next time you try that you would get the same results.

That probably won’t bother you if the measured speed ratio is so high, but imagine that there was malware found on one of the mirrors. That mirror would probably be removed from the list pretty quickly, while the problem was resolved, but that wouldn’t help you, because you’d have it hard coded.

That’s the reason for opening the thread.

I am not so sure about that. Considering that 2 of the 3 Bulgarian mirrors are offline and the third one is incomplete and out of sync, I don’t really know what to trust.

As for speed there seems to be a certain problem (at least for me).
