ar242 wireless and ACER laptop

Hi.

I’m trying to get the AR242 wireless card working with an Acer laptop, and I need some help.

I have added the madwifi repo, updated to version 0.9.4-1, rebooted, and I still can’t configure the card.

I tried this, but it didn’t work:
How to make stubborn atheros ar242 (5211) work - solution - openSUSE Forums

(Note that I deleted 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae, not -default).

I think that you need to unload the ath5k module before the madwifi
one can be loaded. That is done with a

sudo /sbin/modprobe -rv ath5k

You would then need a

sudo /sbin/modprobe -v <madwifi_module_name>

Ultimately, you will need to blacklist ath5k.

Dumb question: how do I figure out the name of the madwifi module?

If I understand correctly, lsmod only gives me a list of active modules.

I tried:

modprobe ath_pci

(from Madwifi UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo) but it said the ath_pci module was not found.

When you built the package, there was some file with the name
xxxxxx.ko. The module name then is xxxxxx. The name lsmod is shorthand
for “list modules” and only lists those that are loaded into memory
now. If it listed all of those that were available, the list for the
default kernel in openSUSE 11.0 would have more than 1200 entries.

And if I was lazy and installed it using the Madwifi repos for SUSE 11?

Just making sure that this is working for you… I wrote up a little guide on how I got my card working (it is for newbies) the whole thread can be found at
Suse and Atheros wireless - openSUSE Forums

If you have a question, I’ll try to answer it. I’m not an expert, but have experience in the muck.

Hmm…still not working.

I’m installing SUSE for a friend, and have to return the laptop tomorrow so I won’t be able to fiddle with it much more. I’ll probably work on it some more later, and maybe try this:

Thanks

I assume it’s futile to ask and make sure that the kmp package (downloaded from the build site) matches the kernel version, but I’ll ask anyway: Does the package extension of the kmp package match the output of ‘uname -a’? That is, kernel version number as well as kernel variation (pae, default, etc)? These two numbers not matching kept me from a working wireless card the first time I tried…
