Apply openvpn certificates

I am using hotel wifi and I want to use ProtonVPN with openvpn. I can’t get the user and password entered. When in Network Manager, I open an openvpn connection and it asked for user and password but clicking on the openvpn file (ending in .pem) does nothing. I tried to copy/paste from the openvpn file but it does not open, it states that it applied the settings but it hasn’t. How can I get this set up? Should I disable Network Manager temporarily?

You don’t need to disable NetworkManager. Are you trying to import a saved VPN config file?

Probably that is not the user/password for the openvpn connection but for the hotel WiFi connection.

Yes, would be good to disable the VPN connection, check that WiFi works and that you can access a website and if that work enable the VPN connection once more.

I MAY have found a workaround. The official Proton VPN apps are for Gnome and Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora. I followed directions to add username and password to openvpn. It seems to be working. BUT, I’m at a relative’s house. When I get to the next hotel, I will see if it works there.
