Applications throw cannot write / permission denied errors then KDE freezes

Leap 42.2
KDE Plasma 5

This has happened on a few occasions. After several hours of running, suddenly applications will start throwing “cannot write” and “permission denied” errors. Usually it’s Thunderbird or Akregator when they attempt (I assume) to do a data fetch. I cannot quit the applications and eventually KDE starts throwing similar “cannot write” errors until it freezes.

When I am lucky, I can SSH from another machine and issue a poweroff. Else, I need to physically reset the machine with the panel button.

When this problem happens, the next rsync backup (which run each hour) will run for a very long time, seemingly wanting to re-copy every file on the computer.

I use a M.2 SSD drive for the OS & applications and a 1 GB (2 x 500 MB) RAID 0 for /home. The drives both show plenty of free space available. Is this problem a symptom of the RAID failing?

Maybe. Run smartctl against the drives (best done from a live rescue) and check their health

Maybe a thermal problem since appears after long heavy use. Check fans and vents are not blocked

Interesting thought. The weather has been warmer lately. I’ll experiment.
