Apper and updating TW

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed

Hi all!

I just installed a VM test environment upgrading openSUSE 12.2 to Tumbleweed using Swerdna’s step-by-step (http://forums.opensuse.org/content/55-how-upgrade-opensuse-12-x-tumbleweed.html) and everything worked fine.

But I was wondering why my sysinfo even after a couple of restarts continues identifying as 12.2 and not as TW (KDE showed an upgrade form 4.8.5 to 4.9.5). So, my first question is if the system is really TW although not identifying itself as TW.

The second point is about updates and Apper as I understood that the correct way to update is the zypper -dup command. But always when I log in, Apper informs me about some possible updates. I usually kill the Apper process in order to use zypper performing the update. Therefore I’d like to know if there is a possibility to deactivate Apper as it seams to be useless for TW. But if I do so, I’ll probably won’t be informed about possible updates and have to start each session with zypper -dup. So, I’d like to know form you guys how you get informed of updates and how you handle them.

  1. Because 12.2 is the current release (Tumbleweed is not a distro or release)

  2. You can safely uninstall apper

zypper rm apper

it will blugger up your system

Until it changes (maybe with upcoming 12.3) Tw has been re-based on the current release, so what you see there isn’t so surprising. You can identify it by the enabled Tw repo, and the installed package levels with their source repo (YaST is best for viewing that info) .

The second point is about updates and Apper as I understood that the correct way to update is the zypper -dup command.

Yes. zypper dup is the supported method for Tw, uniquely so. However, I had no problems applying updates/patches using YaST Online Update (or zypper patch) - those come from the standard 12.x Update repos. Normally you would want the security updates installed as soon as possible. It just depends how often you prefer to run zypper dup (a more complex process).

But always when I log in, Apper informs me about some possible updates.

Yes even on 12.1 standard release, where Apper/PackageKit was buggy, it worked well as a notifier. So on 12.1 Tw I used it only as a notifier, and without any problems. No reason not to do just that on 12.2 Tw. I have actually installed all the hundreds of updates using only Apper on standard 12.2, from the standard repos plus additional repos such as Packman, subpixel, and games. So on 12.2 Tw it should be safe to use simply as a notifier.

But if I do so, I’ll probably won’t be informed about possible updates and have to start each session with zypper -dup. So, I’d like to know form you guys how you get informed of updates and how you handle them.

Yes, there will be no desktop notification! You will need to run YaST or zypper to find out. You can always run zypper dup safely as a trial run using the -D option (see “man zypper”), it informs of the expected outcome but doesn’t change any installed packages.

OK, understood. Cheers!
