APPARENT SCREEN FLICKER

openSUSE 11.3 KDE

There is a frequent flicker on my screen.
Some application OR notification just pops and disappears( giving an impression of a flicker ).
How do i find out which application OR notification is it .
Thanks in advance.

you don’t give nearly enough to even begin to understand the
problem…like:

-is this a new fresh, first time install of 11.3?
-or did you install it over 11.2?

-is it a dual boot machine?

-how much linux experience do you have?

-did you do this before the install: http://tinyurl.com/25ydj4a and if
you did was the install media 100% perfect? if you didn’t do that, do
it now, please

-did your install ever work correctly?

-when did it change? (like immediately after a new kernel, or update,
or you changed something in how KDE is supposed to look, like turned
on desktop effects, or or or or)

-what graphics do you have? are you running the video driver which was
installed, or have you changed it? (from what, to what?) and, did this
flicker begin after that update?

you say something is causing a pop up which flickers out of
sight…tell me, is it flickering to the center of the screen? and are
you running an application full screen, and with KDE set to
automatically give focus to what is under the mouse? if so, either put
your mouse in the center (so the popup will keep focus) OR don’t run
whatever app you have covering the desktop in full screen mode (so you
can see behind the full screen app) OR, next time you see the
“flicker” quick minimize the full screen app and maybe the dialog will
still be there, behind whatever was covering it…

i tell you what, it is gonna be impossible for me to look in my
crystal ball here, and see what you see there, so you are gonna have
to do better at describing than you have…can you, for example use a
cell phone/web cam/camcorder/whatever to record this flicker, and then
upload it to somewhere (youtube) and post the URL here??

I am sorry for not giving enough details.
Here are the details -
openSUSE 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 installed using the LiveCD on Dell Inspiron 1545.
The LiveCD was perfect, both MD5 and SHA1 matched.
I was using 11.2 KDE(dual boot with Vista) previously. I now have done a CLEAN install of 11.3.(Dual boot with Vista)
I am using the DEFAULT video drivers.
As soon as I booted the system,I installed the updates.(So i am unsure if the updates caused it)(But i did not experience flickers when i tested it out using the LiveCD)
I am using compositing with Kwin-window manager.
I made sure that Focus policy is set to “CLICK TO FOCUS”.
The flicker covers the bottom half of the screen.(it occurs RANDOMLY , even when not using full screen apps).

Thanks in advance.

this is important: i do not know what is causing your problem (so,
any real guru reading this is WELCOME to jump in)…but, as you
describe it i can say that i have never seen something like this:

SYMPTOM: randomly the bottom half of the screen is suddenly filled
with the output of some application or notification which disappears
so quickly it is like a flicker

however, though know for sure i think the cause is video driver…

so, lets get even more info (so the real guru doesn’t have to ask):

tell us about your graphics card and driver (i know you DEFAULT, but
default what? should be easy to find in “My Computer”…sure i might
be able to google up that info but why should i?)

and, do you have desktop effects enabled? if you do, disable it–do
the flickers stop?

if my guess is correct then you can probably find the path to
happiness here: http://tinyurl.com/2vsv4rh

let us know, please…

What interests me, is the videocard and whether you kept /home from the previous install. Could you post that?

NO I did not retain the /home folder from 11.2, I formatted the previous /home partition DURING the installation of opensuse11.3

I am using Dell Inspiron 1545. with ‘Mobile Intel GM45 Express chipset’.
The graphics controller is ‘Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller’
(Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD)]
sysinfo:/ also gives the info that the 2D driver is ‘intel’ and 3D driver is ‘Unknown Classic 7.8.2’

Yast->Hardware Information lists the driver as ‘i915’ and the kernel driver is ‘drm’.
YAST Software Management says that xorg-x11-driver-video-intel-legacy is installed and the version is 2.9.1-1.9-x86-4 vendor openSUSE

OUTPUT OF cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep ‘(‘II’)’’ 'intel
According to oldcpu’s post, occurence of intel(0) ,like it happens below, means that i am using the open source intel driver.

I disabled compositing and used the system for about 40 minutes and it flickered once(at the ~10th minute). Then I switched on compositing and used it for another 30 minutes and it flickered(at the 30th minute).
I will keep switching back-and-forth and inform you again.

Thanks a lot for your help.
Thanks in advance.

Just thought this info might help.My knowledge about graphic drivers is very limited. I never changed the default drivers that came with openSUSE 11.2 and i used compositing, compiz, emerald themes all without any problems.
Is 11.3 using the same default that was used in 11.2, or have things changed ?

Thanks.

‘things’ (like the kernel) changes constantly (well, there have been
three (or four, i lost count) new kernels released for 11.3 since it
came out in July…

and, each new kernel will/may break your driver…

and, btw: you might be better off staying with what works (11.2) and
hope 11.4 will work for you…or 11.5 which will be out before 11.2
is no longer supported…

HOWEVER, listen to Knurpht’s expertise…
