Has anyone tried Songbird + iPod on OpenSUSE yet? Any issues? Any hints on installation gotchas? Were you able to put songs/podcasts on the iPod?
i actually tested it… but i dont use it daily cause it still beta… so i use amarok… tho what i tested worked: adding songs with covers…
Use sonbird yes. That’s it.
Worked fine for me. \but it’s not something I really needed. So I don’t use it anymore.
I seem to recall some issues raised regarding it’s legality of use - at least in some countries.
I’m trying it out now but it’s super slow and is “mounting device…” for my iPod forever. has anyone had this issue and figured it out?
My initial impressions:
- It’s not a beta, it’s obviously a pre-alpha
- It’s super buggy, about 1/4 of the options work properly
- Downloading podcasts (which it calls subscriptions but never tells you this) doesn’t really work.
If one of the mp3’s happens to actually play, it’s by pure coincidence. It doesn’t see all the feeds, it says they’re all 1-second in length, and has none of the tag info.
Also, you can’t transfer the podcasts to your iPod.
-
The web-integration is poor and if you click a link that isn’t up, it keeps asking you to confirm/reload until you have to terminate the app.
-
Even if you’ve installed gstreamer (to play mp3), about half the areas of the app where you click to play still say you don’t have it and ask if you want info on it. The other half actually find the installed libraries.
I have submitted bug reports but thought people here might want to know about some of the issues.
Only occasionaly finds an mp3 when it does it assumes it is 1 sec long and plays it a super high speed Iam trying to make this work as well
I wouldn’t waste your time. The bug reports I submitted got the response that they knew podcasting was not working and had tons of issues and they had no idea when it’d be fixed but probably not for the next release.
Even though I’ve been with it since version 0.2 I hate to say this, but save yourself the frustration. About the only thing it’s good for is finding downloadable music tracks on a page. It’s playing is okay but there’s no real way to adjust the quality(no equailzer). It used to play video it doesn’t anymore, at least not for me. IMO this apps peak was at 0.6 & has been downhill ever since. I tried out their RC it’s not what the promise of it was maybe they’ll get better in time. No there was a time I’d have told you how to get it on Suse but not anymore,it’s become that bad IMO.
Songbird has intrigued me for a good while, so I’ve been checking up on the project every now and again. I must say that it’s come a long way, but…it also has a long way yet to go. The last time I tested it out, playback was generally fine on my system, but I couldn’t connect to an mp3 player. I’ve come to use Amarok more and more, and would highly recommend it. If you’re looking for something similar, you could also give Banshee a try.

I like lizards and penguins that’s why I use Opensuse. If it had been an
insect and a bug I’d have no interest here.
