Anyone install hamlib and Fldigi on 11.1 or any Ham apps?

Since I can’t find any Amateur Radio applications when searching in Yast2. I am wanting to know if anyone has installed hamlib and Fldigi on openSuSE 11.1 and if it works? I don’t really know how to do the CLI stuff in the install file. I don’t want to break my install buy screwing something up or getting something that will not work.

I really would like to get my Ham radio stuff off of Windows and on Linux but not having rig control as good as HRD is a show stopper. The people on #hamradio on freenode say Fldigi works as good as HRD does.

Why are there no Amateur Radio Applications in the OpenSuSE repositories? Where are the RPMS? I am getting tired of being told to run Ubuntu and Gnome.

Hi
Both of those applications are in the hamradio repository?

malcolmlewis I went into YAST2 Software management and searched using the names and also under descriptions.

I didn’t even know Software.openSUSE.org existed.

Hi
There you go then  I’m guessing all is good now you have found the
openSuSE build service?

From the command line or using alt+F2 if you enter the following as
well;

/sbin/yast2 webpin_package_search

Yes thanks malcolmlewis I have it on my Bookmark bar now.

Too bad Fldigi is nowhere near as useful as Ham Radio Deluxe. Although I am telling Fldigi to use the correct hamlib file for my radio it doesn’t seem to find it or intialise it on any “tty” I had on the list.

I checked my BIOS settings and the serial port is configured to be on but it doesn’t show up in YSAT2’s hardware list. There are no serial ports displayed.

Once again “ham radio” under Linux is vastly over hyped. HRD is pretty much plug and play. Linux is massive configuration setting and doesn’t “just work”. Looks like I’ll have to continue to use Linux for everything except Amateur Radio like I have been for the last six years.

I’ll go through the online documentation for Fldigi like I did for Windows XP but I never got it working under XP either. Like I said it works und HRD, DXLabs, Mixw etc, it doesn’t work under Fldigi under XP or Linux.

Doesn’t work with a USB to serial converter that does show up in “Hardware” and in Fldigi with the radio selected from hamlib. Doesnt work the RigCAT with the correct xml file in “rigs” either on /dev/ttyUSB0 either. Says “rig not specified”. It gives you no way to set the serial port to 4800 8 2 and none which is required by the TS-570D. All you can do is change the baud rate. it has a space for “Advanced configuration” but the online documentation doesn’t even mention it.

Please don’t hype this software. Although the documentation seems good it appears this only runs on Ubuntu and Gnome on a computer that isn’t used to do anything else except run this software. It must also be installed by someone who was born knowing all the CLI configuration switches and commands by memory apparently.

Hi
If your using usb->serial converter you may need to edit the fstab file
and change usbfs to auto. Found this was necessary for my garmin gps.

gnomesu gedit /etc/fstab

You need to change it to be like;

usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto

Nope that didn’t help.

I did have to make myself a member of uucp. The serial to USB converter shows up in /var/log as well. The software just refuses to communicate with the radio

Back to Windows XP for Ham radio operating.

Well I wish I’d found this thread sooner having wasted all day trying to get hamlib to install. It took most of yesterday installing KDE then Gnome after finding KDE impossibly difficult to navigate.:disapointed:

I really wanted to like Opensuse having tried 10 but found it lacking but it is far from user friendly. Installing software is a complete nightmare in Linux. :bad:

Well it’s back to XP then. At least HRD works even if it is bloat ware!

It really shouldn’t be this difficult to install programs!!! :frowning:

I got fldigi working on XP with my Flex-3000 SDR. I used the XML files and gave up on hamlib. I never got it playing with my TS-2000 or my TS-570. I am sure it would work in openSUSE 11.1 if knew what port the USB to serial converter I was using was on. The XML files work.

PowerSDR only works under Windows currently they have no release date for a Linux version but they are planning one. So I have a brand now purpose built quad core box as half of my Flex-3000 set up. I know fldigi works because I have used it but it has been on top of PowerSDR.

Simon has put a ton of work into HRD but it is bloated and he doesn’t like open source I don’t think. Look at DXlabs stuff. DM780 is the best thing going in the HRD suite, its hard to beat.

Yes I was rather unkind about HRD being bloatware. He has put a lot of work into HRD and for that I feel very humble.

On a better day I would not have called it bloatware.

Think I’ve spent far too much time trying to rid myself of Bill Gate’s bloatware thinking I could transfer all my useage over to Linux but unfortunately as with all free software you can’t expect everything to work perfectly.

Well a few days ago I got Fldigi working in 11.2, almost. Biggest issue was making sure that I had permission to the serial port. Just had to go stumble through stuff and learn that I needed to go to Control Panel ->User and Group Management and edit my access to include “dialout”. Now the serial port works for PTT.

The sound card stuff had to be reconfigured after that with several close outs and reopens which also got the “Line In” selection to work instead of just the “Mic” input. Weird, but I did crash and slam through it somehow. Square peg, round hole, big hammer.

Now my only problem is that when I type something or hit a macro button the thing just hangs there and will take 3 minutes to ssssslllllooooowwwwwlllllyyyyy send out even just my callsign in the TX field. No clue on that, but onward.

Slow to respond from any other button clicks. Takes about 3 times longer then in XP.

HBill

UPDATE 6-6-2010

I gave up on the java version and got the RPM from DL8FCL here:

Index of /repositories/home:/dl8fcl

After doing all the proper install stuff in the terminal I got it to work great. I had to mess with the sound card sample rate settings, but pretty sure I got it close enough until I feel like fine tunning it.

All works well on TX and RX. I also got flarq and wrap to work perfect with it too. My only problem now is that I’m trying to install pskmail_server and it’s crashing on the install. I seem to be missing a perl module Net/GPSD.pm that I can not find. As soon as I can get it, and maybe the next missing one that pops up, I should be up and running 100% with all the stuff/accessories.

Hi
Here is a built rpm;
http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=perl-Net-GPSD&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.2

Or just use cpan to install? There is a application called cpanspec as
well which you can run along with the name of the perl module your
after, it then downloads and builds an rpm for you.

Thanks! That seemed to do it. Now my next problem is no Geo/Functions.pm

I found an .rpm but installing gives me the error:

nothing provides perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.10.1) needed by perl-Geo-Functions

Not so easy for me to work with, but with what I learned google’n and searching is that 5.10.1 is the latest version or something like that. This one is tougher and taking way more time to get up and going then fldigi did. LOL!

Hi
Your probably better off to use cpan and build everything against your
current version, see here
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/modules/index.html
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/modules/INSTALL.html

Note to install it would be sudo make install

You just need to install Geo::functions from the command line.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a shot when I got some time to sit down for more then a few minutes. I will post any updates on my progress.

A separate issue I noticed is that whenever I close regular PSKMail it closes down all open apps and kicks me out to the log in screen. I will take a look at the error logs about that after I finish up with the perl stuff for the pskmail server. Just figure I should have that on too in this thread so it’s searchable for others.

Well, with HRD the waterfall dies and it brings each of my PC’s to a complete halt whenever I try it under XP, so there is something not quite right there.

Fldigi works fine using Mandriva 2010 but my wireless card will not work so I am trying SUSE and not having much fun. Every attempt at installing fldigi gives me either a repository error (already exists) or a dependency error (libxmlrpc++.so.3, I think that is correct). I compiled my own with Mandriva; don’t seem to be able to get it to work with Suse; any tips gratefully received.
Thanks,
Rod

libxmlrpc++.so.3 is provided by libxmlrpc++3 1.06.40 RPM on openSUSE 11.1.

Many thanks but I get the same message as with previous tries:-

[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.CkNACZ] Repository already exists.

which is why I don’t understand that fldigi can’t find it.
