Any way to delete "spent" notifications from the user menu?

Anybody discovered a way to delete “spent” notifications from the user menu?

Once acknowledged I see no further use for them, all they are doing is cluttering up the menu.

Do they self-destruct after a preset time or build up forever and a day.

This is yet another discourse topic that mentions CSS customization. Anyone knows if users can define own CSS?

My google-fu only managed to return: How to delete/clear notifications? - support - Discourse Meta which dates from 2016 and basically says they can’t be deleted; but, that was six years ago, so it seems nothing has changed in the intervening period.
