Any Pinephone Experience Here?

Not sure if this is the forum, or if it should be in chitty-chatty, but:

I’m curious. Anyone here tried the Pinephone? Anyone using it now? What is your experience with it?

I always try to keep my ear to the ground when it comes to projects like Pinephone, Fairphone, and the Librem 5.

Bought one yesterday. Started Manjaro running KDE, but I am confused by apps I am unfamiliar with. Burned an openSUSE sd and it booted. Managed to connect to the Internet and read the front page of the NY Times. Connected a Telenor SIM and can call. But struggling with a totally new (to me) environment as I have hated all smartphones I have tried and gave them away.

Hi, @ionmich! Just got back onto the Forums again. So, now January 2024, what has been your experience with the Pinephone?

I’m happy with it. Using PostmarketOS which has been much more stable than Arch Linux, Manjaro, and our favorite openSUSE, which works fine until updated. The camera is not great and battery life somewhat limiting, but then I have an earlier version. I believe newer versions have better batteries. Haven’t tried to emulate Android for “apps” which I avoid being somewhat of a Luddite.

Using an old one to develop an encryption hardware. Only use it for transport of sms/messenger/google chat…etc. I think it’s the one with postmarketos pre-installed but can’t remember right now. It is just right for my purpose.

PS. It’s just a spare time project but it’s going really well. Crypto implemented is OTP. The only mathematical proven that cannot be cracked.

openSUSE Tumbleweed has matured sufficiently that I have switched from PostmarketOS to it and can use Thunderbird, Firefox, Angelfish and Nordvpn. It now can display to a regular monitor and using a regular keyboard makes software changes much simpler.

Thank you for this new information, Ion! Useful to know.

Today’s TW update bricked it. No GUI. This has happened after many updates to functioning versions. Back to Postmarket OS which is solid.
