I’ve been searching for Kindle applications for Linux and I can only find one that relies on Wine (which I absolutely hate). Does anybody know whether there’s any application out there that allows to view kindle formats without relying on Wine?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestion!

have you asked the Kindle folks when they plan to provide a . . .
or, suggest you are standing by with a smile wishing to beta test for
them…and, i just bet if they try they will find some linux devs
willing to help them…

I checked on amazon (which provides kindle app for every darn OS except Linux) and they do not have any form to send comments specifically about that. The only thing would be trying to contact the customer service, i will try that. It makes absolutely no sense to provide the kindle app for OSs like blackberry phones and not for linux…

OF COURSE I have! I have been around long enough to know how to use google, in fact. From those results I found the Wine-based kindle app mentioned earlier (which also seems to cause problems, as there are several threads of people in different distros that cannot get it to work).
Have you tried Calibre? It looks like it has support for Kindle.
Yes, I have it installed. It can successfully convert in seconds many formats that kindle also support (such as epub) but it does not seem to be able to successfully convert the proprietary amazon kindle format .AZW (it cannot whenever the files are DRM protected)
I don’t know that any open source app will be able to handle DRM as you’re describing. It’s pretty restrictive and would require a special license.
Yeah. I guess it’s Amazon that has to release their reader in the Linux version too (I still can’t figure why they have not done yet while they have any other OS). :-/
Many thanks for the replies, I appreciate.

I wonder if they need DRM support in the operating system.

I dont know if DRM support in the OS is the issue. On the forum pages of Amazon there are many users asking why there is no official Linux version for the kindle reader. Since the forum is only handled by users and not by Amazon staff, there are no answers.
However I sent an email to kindle-feedback@amazon.com.
Also, a friend of mine, that was in the University with me, has just graduated and has been hired by Amazon to work on the Kindle (he starts the job at Amazon in September). He was a genius of Linux programming so I am sending him an email with the suggestion too

That’s potentially fantastic news! I hope your contact has the mandate to create a Linux version for us. (Hopefully, they don’t see it as unimportant, or a DRM issue). Please keep us posted.

understand, but realize that daily there are many here who don’t look
before they ask…and, on my screen your fonts/letters/words look
amazingly similar to those that ask first (or with low googleFU, search
with terms not highly likely to produce the desired results)
on the other hand, there is a reason i
asked: “have you been here?” rather than
commanded: “see this NOW, and search BEFORE asking!!” >:(
look around, it seems that somewhere ‘they’ are teaching folks to begin
their question with something like “I’ve been searching for Kindle
applications for Linux” before they ask their question . . .
anyway, i was trying to be helpful and thorough–not trying to intimate
that you weren’t smart enough to use google.
and, i do hope you are successful in getting kindle on Linux…
HEY! here is an idea: maybe Google should build an eBook app for Android
that reads all kinds of formats on all kinds of mobile and non-mobile
devices…and, maybe they will want it to be open source…
but, maybe they have not thought of that…yet…
be a hero and ask google (not command)

DenverD, i was a moderator on the old opensuse forum SLS for 4 years and I know how these things go.
On the other hand if you had read the google search result at the link that you posted yourself, instead of noticing that “yay google does have results when i input linux kindle!” (which it has for whatever keywords you input) you would have quickly realized that there is nothing conclusive in those results, other than the wine based app which i mentioned from the beginning.
If there is one thing I learned from being a moderator in linux forums as well as in other types of forums in the past, is that if your attitude is “go google it” then probably you should not waste your time answering people’s questions in forums. Invest your time in something else, there’s plenty to choose from. At the very least, before posting the same old “go google it”, take a look at what google has to offer.

GINZO, sorry i wasn’t aware of how import you are…

GINZO, i guess in all that time you never learned how to ask a question
the smart way <http://tinyurl.com/anel>, or else i would have known what
you had already done in your search, and how experienced you are…
and, had i known those things i wouldn’t have bothered your highness
with my inefficient and non-helpful help.
thanks for you help and guidance.
but, learn how to PM your disapproval of unpaid peons…

LMAO. Probably you have to refine your mad skills of knowing if someone has googled in advance or not. I do not PM things that I do not need to hide, and since I do not say things that need hiding, I never PM anybody.
You can stop your sarcasm any time as it’s nothing funny nor in the right place in a linux community.

Dear Amazon,
I am a customer and I have noticed that you do not have a kindle reader
for Linux operating systems.
I have checked around forums and there are many users wondering when/if
this will be available. Linux is becoming increasingly popular for
personal computers and laptops and the Linux community counts millions
of users worldwide.
There are some other opensource tools for kindle, but none of them is
capable of reading DRM-protected kindle files.
I would love to hear from you about whether Amazon has any plans to develop a
kindle application for Linux in the near future, and if not, is there a
reason why Linux has been excluded while most other commonly used
operating systems have a kindle application?
Many thanks
Best regards
Rossana
So I will send the email to my friend that is going to work for Amazon-kindle. Maybe if he suggests that once he works for them, they will take a suggestion from an insider more seriously than feedback from customers.
It is probably the DRM that is the issue, at least Amazon provide an
rpm to download mp3’s, so the are IMHO Linux friendly

Yeah that’s the reason probably. The person that responded to my feedback email did not answer my question “why has Linux been excluded” unfortunately, I was very curious to know the answer from them.
Pathetic… DD you need a holiday.
