Just curious. Found out my phone is saving in this format. I have switched it to save as JPEG now but I have
a few photos that will need to either be converted or opened with a native app. I’ve heard some distros have a
GIMP plugin and some other HEIF converters but not seeing anything with openSuSE yet.
Hi
It’s there as libheif1 (HEIF file format decoder and encoder) in Tumbleweed it’s in the multimedia:libs repository but not the latest or built… let me look at updating…
heif-convert heif-enc heif-info heif-thumbnailer
Hi
Hmmm, I can build locally for tumbleweed only, but some of the supporting libraries are not in the release… looks like the one I have was built locally awhile back…
Hi
Since Packman have the required libraries, cleaned it up and submitted there for you;

Hi malcolm,
Is the rpm available for installation at pacman repo?
Maybe I’m asking too much on the possibility for a gimp-heif-plugin rpm also:)
Many thanks for the help you are extending to us openSUSE users.
Hi
Soon, it just needs someone (other than myself, although I could accept it) to review and accept
Do you have a link to a plugin?
Hi
Here you go: Request 4653 - Packman Build Service PMBS
I’m guessing it’s not enabled in GIMP as it needs gimp built with the likes of libheif present. Tested in Tumbleweed and can work with heif images
Hi,
Thank you so much.:good:
The Gimp 2.10 supports the plugin provided libheif1 is installed.
I compiled libheif1 on my tumbleweed but I am waiting for your
libheif1 in the pacman repo now that you are going to maintain it.
I also tried to comple the plugin but was not successful a month ago.
I tried a fedora gimp-heif-plugin in tumbleweed just to see if it will work and it did.
I am not comfortable with it so I remove it in tumbleweed.
Hi
Both packages have been accepted into Packman Essentials, so you should be good to go… There will probably be an update soon as have split out the gdk pixbuf loader part into it’s own sub-package.
Hi,
Once again, thanks and happy holidays.:good:
Digikam version 6.4.0, available form the Leap 15.1 KDE:Extra repository, supports the HEIF image format: <https://www.digikam.org/news/2019-11-09-6.4.0_release_announcement/>.
A new image format is now supported as native: HEIF. This container is used by Apple to store photo in iOS devices. HEIF is a file format for individual images and image sequences.
Hi
Yes, so does GIMP from 2.10.0, however, neither are built with the support since the heif library is not present…
Ref: Welcome - openSUSE Build Service
265s] -- digiKam will be compiled without HEIF encoding support.
Digikam would need to be built on packman as it requires non-free codec support…
Here it’s only gimp 2.10 is capable of reading and writing HEIF.
I saw in the net some postings that krita has a builtin support also
with a plugin but I haven’t seen a plugin anywhere.
Thanks for malcolm’s help with the plugin, it is working flawlessly in gimp.
Happy New Year foks!!!
Hi
Have been working on an update to cmake building with another distribution user (https://github.com/strukturag/libheif/pull/195), in this case there will be no heif-tools (they are considered examples anyway) provided, just the library, gdk loader and development files.
If heif-tools are installed you will see it removed on the next update… built and tested along with the GIMP plugin.
https://pmbs.links2linux.de/package/show/home:malcolmlewis:branches:Essentials/libheif
Not sure when the update will appear as may wait for the pull request to be included.
The thumbnails suddenly gone for HEIC files.
HEIF thumbnail images not showing in thunar
and dolphin. Gimp plugin still work. Any thoughts?
Hi
What version is installed? Is gdk-pixbuf-loader-libheif installed?
Hi,
Yes it is installed. Version 1.6.2
Before when I open the HEIC files it automatically show the thumbnail images.
I noticed this time, if I open a file with gimp and try to play with it for a while without
saving or anything the thumbnail that was opened in gimp show the image in thumbnail.
Thanks.
Hi
So all good now? The thumbnailer (part of heif-tools) was dropped.
Hi,
It’s a temporary workaround per image.
As soon as I umount the iphone the next mount the thumbnail image is gone.
I’m ok as long as the gimp can open and manipulate the images.
It’s not a problem for me.
Thanks for your dedication in helping us here, especially the app packaging part.
Your work is really much appreciated.
I’m also trying to view these files from my iphone using leap 15.2
