Any biochemists arround? I'm in over my head

As you know, I have been emersing myself in researcching the subject of diabetes which has lead me into the realm of biochemistry. I’m no chemist. I’m more of a computer/physics person. I can do particle physics, theoretical physics, relativistic physics, and so on. But the biochemistry makes my head spin and swim. I’m trying to decipher this Insulin signalling – Bevan 114 (8): 1429 – Journal of Cell Science

Well, they didn’t exactly fill that one with trade jargon, did they now? I love it when people write papers in plain english!

One thing for sure, you do need a biochemist. The results they are discussing are definitely referring to a very refined reaction - and you’d need to be a biochemist to know what the applicability is.

It’s a shame, really. People really CAN write in plain English. It’s just that they choose not to!

Might I suggest either a diabetes forum, or a biochem forum?

Yes your way over your head here. Looking at the link, they are talking about Molecular associations as would be needed by a research lab to develop and prove to a scientific body that their new drug/treatment is sound, validated, and results are reproducible. IMHO you have leaped from taking readings and evaluating nutrition right past the formula’s into dissecting cells at a molecular level.

Jonathan,

I remember you started building this a while ago. Isn’t there a way to get some University student(s) involved in the biochemical -> software part? I mean, I cannot imagine the biochemists and their labs don’t use software to check and control the processes they’re trying to comprehend. Your part should be an interface between your software and theirs, correct me if I’m wrong. I know from experience how hard it is to deal with data I absolutely know nothing about when writing software.

Why don’t you try the usenet? I haven’t used it in a while, but there used to be some great science newsgroups used by academics and others. One of these might be helpful:

Chemistry Newsgroups

I have tried contacting the Mayo Clinic, but have had no responce yet. The suggestions are good. If you all remember, a bit a go, I asked for some help finding equations about insulin cascade, and you all came through. When I looked at the paper, it did have the equations I needed, but the paper was on insulin signaling, and I wanted to better understand the equations and what that paper was talking about, so I began my search which lead me to this.

I am prone to get in over my head, but I will get it. It just means I have a lot of research to do. I don’t dare discuss this with my doctor as it’s over their head.
