Antivirus & Firewall Software for Linux 13.2

@ m_ridzon: Hi, welcome to openSUSE, I recommend you to stop worrying about security and just “have a lot of fun” with your computer, linux is not windows, you won’t get your files deleted from downloading a picture or mp3 song, linux by default is 1000 times more secure than windows!:cool:

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

Best advice yet UNLESS you have to network with a bunch of Windows
machines…

The whole answer depends on the specific situation. Around here, every
machine is running Linux but I still have need for the occasional Win VM.
That can be tricky, especially if you have SAMBA shares.

Thank you for your kind welcoming! However, part of my “fun” is understanding how it works. I’m a learner by nature (engineer by profession), so I find myself poking around figuring out how stuff works. And currently, it appears something is not working as it should. So I’m trying to figure out why my software updater is not working per the replies given by others on here. My question…

Notification for the Package Updater is on in Settings. However, something is wrong with the notifications. I had more updates today, but received no notification from the message tray. The sensitivity of the bottom right corner of my screen does not seem to work either. When I hover the mouse there, the message tray does not appear. But if I hit Super + M, the message tray will appear. Oddly enough though, the sensitivity of the upper left corner does work to open the Activities Overview. I’m not sure why the upper left corner sensitivity works, but not the lower right. Any ideas? I’m using Gnome 3.14.1 and the whole operating system was freshly installed recently. And I’m too new to imagine I de-activated the message and the lower right corner’s sensitivity on my own, on purpose.

Granted, it’s not a huge deal if it is left broken and not working properly. But again, I’m trying to figure out why since that’s part of my enjoyment in discovering my new Linux machine. :slight_smile:

Any thoughts?

My strong impression is that you here start more or less new questions that are not covered at all by the title of this thread.

It is always the best to

  • search for the best fitting (sub)forum for a problem/question;
  • make a good title that advertises your problem/question in a way to get the attention of people knowing about the subject;
  • and, as a consequence ask about only one problem/question per thread.

Putting new questions somewhere halfway a thread where only a few people might be subscribed to will not get the attention you want.
