Hi all,
It used to work… I have no idea what I updated that broke it… Help??
I get no sound at all anymore, but trying to test doesn’t give errors…

Nice laptop! I have a Dell Studio 1537, running openSUSE-11.1. But I have booted it to the 11.2 live CDs many times, and successfully tested the audio, so I know audio works in 11.2.
The problem, as I see it, in your case is a bad mixer setting. If using KDE make certain you go to the mixer and add the speaker control channel.
!**!Amixer output

Mixer name : ‘Silicon Image SiI1392 HDMI’ Simple mixer control ‘Speaker’,0

Front Right: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]
Sigh
you know - that was it. For some reason the speaker channel wasn’t showing up in the kmixer - I had to hide/unhide it to get it to show up, and there it was - muted.
It disappeared at some point, and the way I looked, was to look to make sure all the channels were selected to be shown, then looked at the sliders and maxed them all/unmuted them all. Since the slider wasn’t there, I didn’t notice it was muted.
Arrgh - always the easy things
And - I actually like the Studio, except for the sound buttons losing their mappings once in a while under 11.1 - I’d have to remap them. Hasn’t been an issue under 11.2 though
I have 11.2 running on 4 desktop PCs in our apartment, but still have not installed it on our laptops.
My Dell Studio 1537 laptop (P8400 w/ Radeon 3450 HD graphics ) is needed for a few upcoming business meetings, and since it is working now with 11.1 I do not want to change anything until these business meetings are out of the way. There has also been some complaints about ATI graphic drivers and also about the openGL radeon and radeonHD drivers for use with openSUSE-11.2, so I am not in a hurry to update to 11.2 until I fully understand what the risks of an update may mean.
The only sound aspect that I do not have running on my Dell Studio 1537 latop is the audio with the HDMI output (the video works). But I have not attempted/tested that functionality since January or February of this year, and its possible the more recent drivers have fixed that.
