Installing on Thinkpad X40, on top of 10.2 from DVD
Seems OK until attempting to log in via xdm
Takes name/password, flashes screen and presents the login screen again
Looking at /var/log/xdm i see
(EE) No input driver/identifier specified (ignored)
(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate oictl for device
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for “TPPS/2 IBM Trackpoint”

I also had troubles with ethernet renaming and yast does not seem to have options for network settings. Lots of other oddities, but until I have a screen it is hard to investigate
This is the 4th 11.3 machine – one installed easily, one after a small hiatus and one got very confused but seems happier now
Just some more information. On my other laptop (Thinkpad x200s) this morning the xdm is failing. i can get a screen via xinit but xdm just failed.

Yesterday upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 on the ThinkPad X200. The same errors with the “input driver”. Also have an error “Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation”. Deleted all the packets related to the kde and xorg. Reinstalled them again from DVD. It didn’t help.
Not necessarily. Try creating a network install cd and boot from that. The rest comes directly from the repo site and I find it is by far the easiest method.
Note graphic drivers are handled differently on openSUSE-11.3 than on previous openSUSE versions. Sometimes users need to type ‘nomodeset’ in the installation cd/dvd initial boot splash menu for the installation to work. And sometimes after the initial install, one still has to type ‘nomodeset’ in the installation hard drive boot menu (grub menu). There is some guidance here: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
More information for the faili=ures on Thinkpad X41

I can use the machin eif i wait for the nfsmounts to time out, go to level 3 and run xinit – and use a wired ethernet
I spend some time tracing the actions of xdm by bugging Xsetup. The trace did not show anything especially odd; it does produce one error message that is not produced on teh other laptop (which is now working most of the time)
The effect is to offer the logon screen, accept nam eand password, and then to blank screen, long delay and a represented logon scren (but with a black background rather that grey). Happens for all users
Are there no suggestions as where to look next?

PS Am I the only one who dislikes the ungrammatical “Welcome at CLIENTHOST” in /etc/X11/Xresources? Welcome to … seems so much better
