Annoying Adobe Flash Player...

I’ve downloaded the “YUM” and “.rpm” versions of Adobe Flash Player, and ran the installers that come up when I click on the file that was downloaded to my desktop. But it didn’t make a difference. I still can’t play YouTube videos and other flash features. :open_mouth:

Forget those. Do this. Open a terminal and type: su
then your root password. Now type:

zypper in flash-player

I get this lovely error:

Retrieving repository 'openSUSE-11.1-Debug' metadata /]Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/debug/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/suse/setup/descr/packages.DU.gz':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'ftp5.gwdg.de'

:frowning:

Deactivate the DEBUG Repo, you certainly don’t need it.

Open software repositories and just leave enabled and refresh: OSS, NON-OSS, Updates.

now try

Please also post result of

zypper lr

How?

Open software repositories and just leave enabled and refresh: OSS, NON-OSS, Updates.

Lol, when I try to do that, it also says “connection failed.” I can get a screenshot if you want.

– deleted – one person helping is enough

from su terminal

zypper mr -d 1
zypper mr -d 4
zypper mr -r 2
zypper mr -r 3
zypper mr -r 5
zypper ref
zypper in flash-player

I think that’s correct

With YaST => Software Repositories

Thanks, done it!

And your internet connection is otherwise OK?

Yep. :\

from su terminal

I think that’s correct.

Everything went fine up until the “zypper ref” command, where I got the same error:

Retrieving repository 'openSUSE-11.1-Non-Oss' metadata -]Download (curl) errorfor 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/non-oss/suse/setup/descr/packages.en.gz':

I’m sorry you’re having that problem, mine worked fine, using OpenSUSE 10.3 with FF2, and now with 11.1 and FF3, the YouTube videos work fine, and the flash plugin worked fine in 10.3 and in 11.1, but there’s a stand-a-lone Linux flash player from Adobe that works fine for flash games, like one site I visit that has flash games on it, those .swf flies I downloaded to an external hard drive.

I’m going to post a problem with OpenSUSE 11.1, which I’ll post elsewhere, if after searching I don’t see the problem already addressed or answered somewhere, but I never had any problems with OpenSUSE 10.2, 10.3, and FF2, but with OpenSUSE 11.1, as I feared, FF3 is giving me problems.

I’ll just mention that I’m going to do a search in the forum to see if anyone else is having a different problem with FF3 than what you’re having, and that is, that FF3, just like the Windows Firefox3 version, crashes, closes on me, it does surf the Internet faster than FF2, but these problems are giving me headaches.

View the Screen Shot thread, you’ll see a sample of what I had, which was 606 infections, or something like that, and I had to deal with that, but now again, today, when using Firefox, I again have adware coming through.

I never had that problem with FF2, only FF3, nor did I have any problems with OpenSUSE 10.2 or 10.3, except there was a slight “glitch” in 10.2 in the installation procedure I needed to work around.

Anyway, again today I need to “deal” with another problem, maybe I need to contact the Firefox “team” with that problem…I was playing games on Facebook and this is what I saw.

I’m sorry to say I really dislike FF3, I should also post another thread somewhere “begging” them to give me FF2 back. I just really dislike FF3.

I know there’s another choice in KDE for a browser, but I need to check to see if there’s an alternative to FF3 in Gnome.

:frowning:

My system lets in all sorts of adware, trojan horses, etc., and OpenSUSE never allowed that to get in before.

The firewall is active.

Anwyay, I’m either going to post several problems I’m having with OpenSUSE 11.1 compared to versions 10.2 and 10.3, or I’ll go back to using Windows as I only had 3 problems with that since Windows 95, but already, with Linux, within just a few years maybe 5 or so, I’ve had more adware, trojan horses, etc, and I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining, it’s more like I’d like to spread it around, the problems I’m having with Linux, now I’ll need to deal with this a third time…I just don’t know what to do.

Have a Great Day,
Bernard

Just in case - disable IPv6
Disable IPv6 - openSUSE Forums

reboot required

try again

In case that was directed towards me, I tried and it didn’t help. I still get this when trying the “zypper in flash-player” command:

Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/non-oss/content':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

Please now post the result of this again:

zypper lr --details

Hey, in following these instructions from the Adobe website:

Installation instructions for the YUM repository definition

   1. Click the download link to begin installation. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.
   2. Save the .rpm file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.
   3. In terminal, navigate to the desktop and type # rpm -Uvh <rpm_package_file>. Click Enter. (Note: This must be done as a root user).
   4. Once the installation is complete, in terminal, type # yum install flash-plugin. Click Enter. (Note: This must be done as a root user).
   5. To verify the plugin is installed in Mozilla, launch Mozilla and choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.
   6. To get the most up-to-date Flash Player in the future, simply type # yum update flash-plugin in terminal. You will not need to repeat steps 1-4.

I get to step 3 and the terminal says it’s already installed. I go to step 4 and it says “yum” command not found. Fantastic. So I tried a load of variations of the command and nothing works. And in the add-ons manager of Firefox, it still says I still don’t have Adobe Flash Player. :sarcastic:

Why don’t you post what I asked for.

FYI; YUM is no use to you in suse

I didn’t see, here:

YUM is of no use? Then which Adobe Flash should I download? There was a YUM version, an .rpm version… a lot of versions.

Now do this:

rpm -qi flash-player

post result

No problem; I managed to get it working.

OK well done.
