[ANNOUNCEMENT] Dropping Tumbleweed, Evergreen and PreRelease/Beta forum.

Hi All
After discussion amongst forum staff we are going to implement the following changes to the English Technical Help forums;

  1. Close and archive off the current Tumbleweed, Evergreen and PreRelease/Beta forum (including nntp).
  2. In the English Technical Help forums we will implement a mandatory prefix to be assigned when creating a new thread comprising (but not limited to the following) in release order;
  • openSUSE Tumbleweed
  • openSUSE Leap 42.x
  • openSUSE 13.2
  • openSUSE 13.1
  • Evergreen (11.4)
  • openSUSE other versions

Motivation for this change is a result of the introduction of the rolling release model Tumbleweed and the lack of a pre or beta release, this has also resulted in users unsure of where to post sometimes and the need for forum staff to move threads on a regular basis when using Tumbleweed or in some cases Evergreen. It will also help alleviate the additional question of what release of openSUSE are you using.

As there are new releases the prefixes will be updated accordingly.

Some of you may think that the existing forum could be used for pre-release software/applications, this was never the intent of this forum by staff, purely for releases. There is no reason we cannot add an additional prefix say ‘beta software’ or the like to indicate as such in the ‘Applications’ forum, but we are trying to keep these prefixes release specific.

When the change takes place we ask users who have started a thread and wish it to be moved ‘report’ button and point staff to where you would like it moved to and we will do this. If you ARE NOT the original thread starter, then please ping the OP via PM and ask them to report so Forum staff are not moving things on a whim. There is also no reason for a new thread to be started and then provide a link back to the old thread if you think that will be easier.

Note: For our nntp users we will look into implementing an X-Header to identify the prefixes if/when time permits.

This looks like a good change.

The previous way of handling Tumbleweed, etc, did not work all that well, except as a test of the prefix idea.

Sounds good

I was going to ask about that, because the change will be quite
confusing to us. We don’t have currently access to that information.

Would it be possible, instead of an X-header, which is not that easy to
see, to add a line of text to the body of the message, at the start, or
as a signature? It would be more visible to us.

Does the forum software support something like “taglines”? Like the
disclaimer text that is added at the end of emails by the company mail
server.

Fine, sounds like a change we were expecting and now have more details. As with all good announcements, can you give us a time scale for implementation?

That’s possible - the difference between using a header and adding text
to the message, though, is that after a few rounds of quoted replies, a
bunch of extra stuff might get added in. That said, though, that doesn’t
happen with replies that have links to the web interface, so definitely
something we can consider.

In Fidonet, taglines were marked somehow (I forget which, perhaps 3
dots) that the software knew about and stripped automatically on reply.
This is not Fidonet, but there is a similar principle: the signature
text is marked with dash-dash-space-newline, and everything below that
line should be stripped out automatically by a mail editor, and I think,
by a news editor. Thunderbird does, at least.

Thus if the text can be added after the signature, it will not be quoted
on the nntp side.

I guess

Ah, good

I wasn’t sure I understood, then. Now yes.

Hi
Looking at implementing the changes week commencing 20th July

Please, when you finally do it, post a final post to whichever forum is
closed, with the tittle “FORUM CLOSED”. This shows clearly on nntp as
the last post, and there is no doubt what it means, to nntp users
joining later.

The old tumbleweed forum has it, but the old 64 bit forum does not.

Thanks

If you ask him nicely, Malcolm might arrange for a “Last_Post.wav” perhaps by a regimental bugler to be played at the appropriate moment. In case that didn’t work over the NNTP interface, the notation could be converted into Morse code and taglined as per your earlier solution. You could then convert it back to musical notation, for editing into a midi sequencer, and playing back on your tablet in bed to your heart’s content. For that last bit you may have to download an app from the Android store.

PS. Malcolm, thanks for providing the target date.

Pleased you enjoyed the spoof. Good luck with the neighbours. If there is a next time, will post earlier in the day.
