an Update CD ?

hello,

i am a windows user and i am trying to migrate to linux so i am experimenting now so i do a lot of installations / formatting / re installation etc…i completely failed to install OpenSuse 11 but 10.3 is working fine for me.

my questions are :

  1. after i do the installation , i go for the online update “every time” so is there a place where i can download all the important updates since the 10.3 release so that i can just install all the updates offline ?

  2. when i was experimenting with fedora, there was a program called easylife to install all the basic and required software in one click, is there anything similar in opensuse ?

Thanks

openSUSE is set up to download and install updates in one go, partly because it keeps a tally of all the updates to all your programs - unlike Windows which only keeps a tally of MS programs.

When you install openSUSE, you are offered a choice of default desktop and a number of ‘patterns’ which are different groups of software.

You can accept the default and, if there is something else you want, use YaST later to install another ‘pattern’ or individual programs.

You need to go to Yast > Online Update Configuration and register.

That will add an update url; turn on the OpenSUSE Updater & you are set.

Other than security updates, there are changes to the applications and packages most every day. I recommend adding the Yast-Sources you need and check for updates about once a week. That should keep you with a pristine system.

BTW, you can go on about your business while doing the updates. A rare few will require a reboot, many a logout/login = painless.

Have fun…

Anyway i think it would be very usefull. Imagine the scenario with no internet connection. I make a lot of offline installation so i would appreciate. From time to time i have already prepared such a be so building my personal repo but it would be usefull for other users
