AMD RX 580, not even entering GRUB boot menu

Tumbleweed with ASUS Dual-RX580 dual HDMI video here. This system used to work just fine until recently. Now, the system starts, shows the BIOS prompt on screen, then stops. Nothing. Black screen, not even the GRUB boot menu shows up. I can enter the BIOS, which does have a fancy graphical user-interface, though.

When I change back to a spare GeForce-based card, system logs do not even show the failed boot attempt. With that replacement card the system works just fine, but it is an inferior GPU.

I can only conclude that there is a hardware fault but really struggle to believe that. There is no evidence and no reason to think so except for the aforementioned evidence. I suppose there could have been a power surge due to lightning or whatnots, but nothing else in the entire house shows symptoms.

I don’t mean to flog a dead horse but would appreciate suggestions to help diagnose how far the system gets and what is actually wrong. Or, perhaps, how to fix it!
TIA.

Did you check your BIOS/UEFI for any GPU-related options which might need to be adjusted to match your new card?

Well, if you did not even reach GRUB how should there be anything in the Tumbleweed system log?

To me that looks like a strong indication that the problem is related to your new graphics card. Probably the card needs more power than your power-supply can provide or it needs some extra setup in your BIOS/UEFI.

Hi
A 550W power supply minimum and an 8pin power connector to connect to the card… I suspect a power supply issue as well…

If everything worked fine in the past with the AMD card, the current symptoms create a strong smell of power supply issue. How old is everything? Power supply failure over time is common, especially when an older and modest capacity supply’s customary load is increased by a component upgrade or addition.

Do you have multiple RAM sticks? If yes, try removing one or more to decrease the load and see if it gets past POST. If it does, it’s most likely a power supply issue, but there remains a slim chance old RAM is failing, and a bad spot hit trying to POST that wasn’t/isn’t hit using the NVidia.

If the Asus is under warranty, I’d look to it for guidance.

Many thanks for all the suggestions.

Yes, things did work until they broke for no apparent reason. No changes to BIOS settings or firmware, no added components. Power supply is Corsair VS-550, all fairly new.

I will pursue the power supply train of thought further; certainly cheaper to replace PSU than GPU. Might be able to borrow one for testing.

My only Corsair is a CX430 6 years old in one of my many test machines, so not used 24/7, less often than every week, in an old LGA775 box.
