Looking to upgrade to Asus M4A78T-E motherboard with the AMD Phenom II X4 955 quad core processor. are there any issues i need to be aware of beforehand?
will the 11.2 64 bit be fine and give the power this combination should give me?
and lastly, any problems using the WD 1tb Sata-300 drives?
I have a Phenom II X4 940, and it works fine without any issues
Power saving, with the indivudual cores clocking down to 800MHz, works fine too.
Put an NVIDIA card on it. I use ASUS motherboards all the time, never had any issues regarding linux/openSUSE
Yes, put an nVidia card on it if you want heat problems and all that. nVidia will then reject any blame for it and claim that you and the Oem are responsible for it yourself even though it’s all their fault, like they did here:

If you don’t want any such ugly issues, get an Ati card.
I have the M4A78T-E with the X4 955. No problems with OpenSUSE 11.2 in a tripple boot configuration. I’ve had up to three barracudas installed: 320 gb, 1tb, and 1.5 tb without problems.
Like the room has stated, you are usually pretty safe when it comes to cpu’s. The conflicts usually come with audio, video and certain chip-sets. So just do some research: The boards that I have ran on Linux with no problems where the ASUS M3N32-SLI Deluxe and ASUS M3NHT-Deluxe. Both worked great with no chip-set or audio conflicts. Graphics cards that I have used on these boards ranges from 8600GT, 8800GTS G92, GTX 260 & 280, I also owned the GTX 295 which worked but was a pain to enable sli, do to the design of the card, this may have changed by now. Currently I am using a PC that has a nvidia 6150se chip with an AMD Athlon II X2 235e and GT 240 512MB DDR5 which is used for more a media and file server, but works great.
