AMD GPU PRO Driver on Opensuse

As it is, the new AMD proprietary driver is only for Ubuntu, but since they are a sponsor of Opensuse are gonna get a one click install or a repo for it like Nvidia has? Also, I have an amd R7 240 from Gigabyte and the AMD website says 7300 and 7600 models are compatible with the new driver, but I can’t confirm if the 200x series are compatible with this driver, any clues?

Hi
Only if AMD produce the rpms, you would need to ask them.

The in kernel amdgpu driver should work with the later release, depends on the Engineering Name to see which 3D core it’s using;

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -A3 VGA

I had to jump through a few hoops (bugs/requests) to get my R5 working.

Hi
Also looking at this your R7 240 card isn’t supported… Finishes at R7
260.

Bruh… to be honest, the open source driver is quite good, but for some reason, some games only want the proprietary old one (fglrx) or the new one. Also a boost to the fps count would be swell.

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AMD_fglrx#1-click_install_64_bits The old driver 1 click install still exists so it makes sense that the new one gets the 1 click treatment as well

Hi
But your card won’t work with it… so it’s a moot point, one day if/when it happens it will no doubt be available as a 1-click…

Food for thought: what version of openGL is your driver advertising? What version of GL do those particular games say they require?

It’s not just openGL version. Sometimes Steam game requires proprietary driver for some other reason. I know amdgpu-pro will be available on Leap eventually (hopefully before 42.3). But the problem is, it will support only GCN, so people who are still using some old cards or APUs, might have issues running old/indie games on Linux.

Also, openCL is another problem. I don’t know what’s the current status, but I plan to switch to Tumbleweed soon, and don’t know if openCL acceleration is available in LO Calc and Blender with open source driver.

Therefore, I’m not sure is it better to go to Tumbleweed and rely on open source driver, go to Leap 42.2 and hope amdgpu-pro will come soon, or stay on 13.2 (or upgrade to 42.1) and use fglrx

I can’t help you there. I’m simply unfamiliar with it. Perhaps it’s related to a particular extension that is not part of the stated openGL spec. Maybe ask at steam: http://steamcommunity.com/#scrollTop=0

For such devices, the radeon and radeonsi stacks will continue to improve (si, in particular, has made great strides) … si is, for all intense purposes, at v4.5 now too … tuning for particualr games and such, however, will not be on par to say the flgrx

Likely not the greatest ATM … assuming there is a pro version soon (near end of Jan (3rd Thurs of quarter release schedule)), you should be able to use both at the same time – amdgpu oss normally and amdgpu-pro for CL and Vulkan, if so desired.

If you go leap, you can always update your graphics stack and kernel, and get the amdgpu stack too
