AMD 2500+ Dual Core Adequate?

The hard drive on the computer #1 in my signature crashed. It is old (dating back to the days when a 40g drive was really big) and has cycled through several versions of several operating systems. It just wore out I think. I did have backups so didn’t lose anything important.

My question is whether I should just replace the hard drive and continue using the computer itself. The processor is a AMD Athlon x2 64 set in a gigabyte M61PME-S2P main board. It now has 2 gb memory. Is this hardware obsolete or is it still serviceable for general computer use?

I have an old laptop with an Intel(R) Celeron(R) M CPU 420 @ 1.60GHz cpu, 2gb ram, intel r945 gme graphics and a 120gb hdd

It’s running opensuse 12.2 just fine, although I did use the net install iso with a minimal kde install and just added any packages I needed afterwards. Did also disable various things I don’t need on there such as akonadi, everything bluetooth etc etc

So, your old machine could very well still have some life left in it yet, especially if you were to use a more lightweight desktop environment than kde such as lxde

Thank you. I think I will buy a new hard drive and try it. If it doesn’t work well, I can upgrade the processor and main board.
