Amarok won't start

Good evening,

I installed openSUSE yesterday, and at that point, amarok seemed to work fine, but, soon enough, I noticed that it would stutter. A fix for that seemed to be to enable running the audio with highest priority in the Sound System section of the Control Centre. However, now that I have done this, I can’t seem to get amarok to start - it will begin, but will freeze. If I let it stand for long enough, it will load the main page, but adding anything to the playlist finishes it off. This continues if I turn the option off in the Control Centre.

My output from “amarok” in the terminal is:

sevis@localhost:~> amarok
Amarok: [Loader] Starting amarokapp..
Amarok: [Loader] Don't run gdb, valgrind, etc. against this binary! Use amarokapp.
QLayout "unnamed" added to QVBox "unnamed", which already has a layout
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for PlaylistWindow/PlaylistWindow
QObject::connect: Incompatible sender/receiver arguments
        StarManager::ratingsColorsChanged() --> ContextBrowser::ratingOrScoreOrLabelsChanged(const QString&)

And from “amarokapp”

sevis@localhost:~> amarokapp
QLayout "unnamed" added to QVBox "unnamed", which already has a layout
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for PlaylistWindow/PlaylistWindow
QObject::connect: Incompatible sender/receiver arguments

Killed

I am using openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) with KDE 3.5.10 (default kernel).

EDIT: This is amarok 1.4, judging by the splash-screen.

Thank you

I would consider deleting

.kde/share/apps/amarok

Are you usin amarok-packman with amarok-xine from Packman?? You should be.

Thanks, checked, and I seem not to have had amarok-packman installed. I’ve installed that now, and deleted that directory, but there’s no improvement that I can see. It refuses to play both .mp3 and .ogg files, although I have had both working before. I tried it in kaffeine now, and that doesn’t work, either, although it starts, and begins playing, but there’s no sound, in both formats. And, once again, disabling that option does not fix it… I installed several libraries to get it working… Let me find which ones.

EDIT: kdemultimedia3-arts, kdemultimedia3-arts-mad, and libxine1-arts

Erm, okay… It seems that I underestimated the nature and seriousness of my problem. I can’t, however, edit my posts any more (bug?) I’ll follow the instructions in the audio tutorial, and thank you for the help :slight_smile:

Consider doing this

Yast - Software - Software Management
filter by repo
select Packman
From the Packages tab along the top of your screen, select Update all in this list unconditionally.

Check this too:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Thank you! It works again!

Now I have the strong suspicion it’ll begin to stutter and that I’ll have to repeat the whole process - but that’s not a problem, now that I know how to fix it :slight_smile:
