In Amarok 1 in the playlist tab you could choose to make a playlist of 50 random from your collection.
I start using Amarok 2.2.90 now. Where did they hide this functionality?

Had a look around, cannot find anything like that in Amarok 2. Never used it, though. Maybe some of the downloadable scripts - some are about playlist functionality -, can do this for you.
What I sometimes do, is adding entire collection to the playlist, set it to random play, and then pick the favor of least played songs.
Sigh! I use it all the time.
Not that I am especialy fond of the 50, something like 20 or above is also OK.
Adding the whole collection (more then 1800) is bit drastic. Ok I did it, but where is the Random button?
Also, every time Amarok starts, it shows and error window: “invalid URL”. Why? I did not ask to go to any URL!
And when it starts it only shows the upper part of the window and not the rest. Same after I close the window (to the applet) and then click the applet.

You could try removing all the amarok config files and starting again
.kde4/share/config/amarok-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/amarok_homerc
.kde4/share/config/amarokrc
I feel dumb Carl, but I fail to see what your picture aims at. Do not see any Random button on it. Sorry, maybe I need a weekend lol!
Or do you aim at one of my other questions (sorry, I should not add questions to a running thread).
BTW I removed the middle panel completely (as per earlier thread) because I do not see any use for it.
And yes, I could remove all the file ands start again, but I did only start fresh a few hours ago. IIRC I only
. removed the middle panel;
. switched off all ticked Internet Services in the Configuration screen;
. pointed it to my collection directory and let it work through it.
I doubt if there is anuthing inherited from Amarok 1 (from the ~/kde).
You ain’t dumb
I just posted the pic for fun
I can’t see random either, but I’m sure it was there at some point. :\
Sorry for the confusion
I bet you are. Wait for my revenge >:)
As you know I tried 11.2 earlier and with it an earlier Amarok 2. My memory also tells me there was something there. And also about getting 20 tracks or so.
I think this is the improvement of the product >:(

Gotta ask, how big is your collection?
1850 + tracks.
But in the meantime, visting the KDE forums, I found at least a solution how to play random. At the bottom of the Playlist there are six icons. The right one has the tooltip Trcak progression. I (and I am not alone) though that was something like the time ruler at the top of the window. But when you click on it you get a small menu where Random is one of the options.
That allows you to play Random from the playlist. But not to select 50 (or another subset) from the collection. I now select the whole collection (all 1850) and then choose Random.
For me: solved.
What still stays is: how to add tracks to the collection (either from the playlist or from the left panel when set to Files). I asked that on the KDE Amaraok Forums a few days ago, but no reaction until now.
did not know about the bottom icon, thanks! I do know about the option at the top of the play list, click the > and select random from that list also works for me
??? That is completely new for me. Never thought about clicking on a simple character like > . My intuitive feelings seem to be completely different from the Amarok people.
Thanks.

Me neither
For added clarity

Adding files to the collection can be done in several ways:
In both cases the files will automagically appear in the collection.
Amarok does rely a lot on the tags in music files. Easytag is a nice program to check and (auto)edit the tags.
Thanks Knurpht.
I know where my collection is and at the start of using Amarok 2 I pointed it to that path and it worked on it and in the end that is OK.
But now I have somewhere a track that I want to add to the collection. Formerly I did this:
Same could be done from within the collection. There is no need to transfer it to the Playlist, you can right click on any track in the collection, change the tags ((a typo again!) and then reorganise it in the collection thus that it is moved to the correct place and name. This still exists in Amarok 2.
But I still do not see a way to add a track to the colection other then go outside Amarok and do a* mv* (or a GUI equivalent) to ‘some’ place inside the collection path. Then go to Amarok and tell it to syncronise with a changed collection. Then go to the track, edit the tags, and ask to organise it to get it on the correct place.
Now I suppose someone will tell me that I am sticking to the old way of doing this, but I do not even see a new way. Except when what I do (liking a track and wanting it to add to the collection) is a habit hat nobody else has and thus has not been catered for in Amarok 2.

For adding tracks i have found that what works for me is to just clear the
playlist, then select files in the left pane and move it to the playlist.
Takes a while at over 3200 tracks though. I use random by album and prefer
least played, i get pleasant surprises from my collection on a regular basis.
Just ordered a bunch more (about 24 CDs worth).
I think that what you describe is adding tracks from the collection (at left when at Local Music) or files on the system (at left when at Files) to the playlist (at right).
But what I am searching for is putting tracks that are not already part of the collection, into the collection at the correct place (the collection is organisized in a directory tree according to Artist, Album, etc).
BTW we have now TWO ways of doing things Random:

I add tracks to my collection with k3b; it puts them in the correct place
with the correct directory structure just like i told it to. I could use
hints on how to better automate adding the new CD rips to the collection
and the playlist without just blowing the playlist away.
