AmaroK broken: No playlist display.

AmaroK playlist only shows tiny narrow lines for each entry, but no text at all.
Clicking on the “Configure playlist layout”-button brings up a dialog, but
Amarok crashes as soon as I hit the save button in that dialog.

I filed a KDE bug report according to the Pop-up window that appeared because of the crash, and I got a reply that “this is solved since quite some time”.

Fresh openSUSE11.2 install comes with Amarok 2.1.1-7.6 and through KDE-Backport-Repository one get 2.2.1-4.1, which suffers the same bug.

So why does openSUSE11.2 ship with a defunctional Amarok?

Err, 2.2.1 was released yesterday, so while the Amarok-Devs claim that this bug was fixed a long time ago, it did not make it to their latest release yet. Strange?

I can not help you with your problem except to say tha t the problem is probably not with Amarok as such, because in runs well for me and I believe for many others. Where the problem lays I cannot guess. Is there something odd in your installation or hardware. If you really wanted some assistance to troubleshoot your problem some hardware details and some info on your installation would help and assist someone to suggest where to look.

You have of course scanned and rescanned your collection. I know it is obvious but it needs to be asked.

Amarok is running fine here, it got upgraded today 2.2.1-42.1 to 2.2.1-43.1. Maybe you can refresh repo and see if an upgrade is available?

It was functional for me.

I had a new install, with both root and home being freshly formatted.

Upgrading to 2.2.1 did not help either.

However, I did import my old collection through
“Amarok-> Configure-> Collection-> ImportCollection-> Amarok1.4” and selected
collection.db and albumcovers/large/ from a backup of my previous install. I did not copy anything into ~/.kde4 nor ~/.kde, but imported through a copy of my externally mounted backup.

ANYWAY, the issue could be resolved by deleting the directory
~/.kde4/share/apps/amarok/data/
and the empty hidden file
~/.kde4/share/apps/amarok/playlist_layouts/.xml

Not sure what had happened, but I definitely did not copy anything into ~/.kde4.

Further info:
The problem was caused by configuring the “Dizin SimgeM (Directory Cover)” script to save album art as jpg rather than png. This script seems to be installed by default in openSUSE11.2, and I did not realize that it was not part of Amarok itself.
