When i open a compressed file accessible by ark, ark opens it but then ark won’t show any list of the files it is supposed to extract. Keep in mind that these files were created under a windows xp OS and i am able to modify them or move them to the trash. Also ark could show a downloaded tar.gz file i downloaded under OpenSuse. I searched the forum and couldn’t find a way to resolve these problems.
I think i might have found one called karchiver
make sure you have zip, unzip, unrar

Wow, now ark is working like a charm, thanks again Caf
