Alternative and corresponding configuration tools to YaST modules

neat. …

I am tempted to add (for KDE) for sound in the YaST equivalency line:
systemsettings5 kcm_pulseaudio(KDE)

for the Gnome users on this thread … what does the Gnome desktop offer re: sound configuration?

This command wouldn’t work on Plasma 6 then…this is why i explained to use it without number:
systemsettings kcm_pulseaudio
This will work on Leap 15.6 (Plasma 5) an Leap16/TW (Plasma 6).

I’m bad … its late at night here. I meant to type what you typed … but … fatigue.

Thanks for pointing out my error before tomorrow I possibly copy and paste and go even further with my error.

@oldcpu In GNOME is gnome-control-center sound to get a full list it’s gnome-control-center -l or just hit the cog in the menu…

malcolmlewis and hui, thanks for your input. I updated section 2.d (sound) - and hopefully I did not make silly mistakes like last night.

Once this is mature enough, it does make sense to move the content to a wiki (such that others can edit it). At the moment thou, I would have to relearn how to create the wiki.

I started looking at openSUSE wiki aspects, to assess what I need to learn if I am to create a YaST equivalancy wiki out of the input from this page.

I note there are many wiki already on YaST but not on this specific aspect:
https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:YaST

I do not believe I will get around to creating a wiki on “YaST equivalencies” before I start some major travel to different parts of the world. Hence it could be December this year timeframe before I am willing to dedicate the time to start a wiki and see it though to sufficient maturity to share.

Hence if anyone else believes that is too late, and they wish. to start a wiki on this they are welcome. Hopefully the input from this thread on YaST will help.

KDE Plasma documentation is here – <GitHub - KDE/print-manager>

I suspect that, for current and recent printers with Apple and, maybe (often), Linux support, CUPS and Avahi are sufficient for Printer management – plus the support on the major Desktops – KDE Plasma and GNOME.

BTW, just for fun, I re-installed the known printers on my M3 MacBook (newest Sequoia macOS) – all very simple – simply “search” (the network) and then, (Bonjour) “do it” – the Mac also uses the Kyocera CUPS KPDL driver and, installed it without any user interaction …

I’m not sure that such a wiki page is really needed. Many YaST modules have been deprecated for some time, and for many config tasks it didn’t necessarily offer the best way to undertake the task IMHO. New users and those coming from other distros, wouldn’t even miss what they didn’t use or know about. :stuck_out_tongue:

For the most part, network printers and scanners I have access to at work are discovered automatically and no configuration required. I suspect this the same for many users with modern network connected multifunction devices.

We’ll have to wait for the Leap 16 documentation – the Leap 15.6 documentation “Startup Guide” related to Printer setup, only mentioned the CUPS CLI commands; the “GNOME User Guide” details how to access the “GNOME Printers” GUI.

Well, my comments were not specific to Leap as such. I’ve always preferred the CUPS web interface over what YaST provided, especially when assisting others with manual configuration involving printers. HPLIP being an exception.

Is there a substitute for the ncurses version of yast (yast2 IINM)?
Specifically the Software Manager module, it saved my bacon many times, usually after Nvidia blob updates. I saw no indication that Myrlyn could be used on the command line.

I have a fuzzy recollection, that when configuring my HP printer/scanner with YaST, using the wizard, it in fact uses hplip.

HP, typically for printers, provide good GNU/Linux support. Do any other printer suppliers provide similar support levels? If I knew of another printer supplier that had a GNU/Linux app for installing their printer, I could add such to the equivalency list.

The equivalent of “Myrlyn command line” is literally “zypper”.

I have not mentioned Avahi above. When I was searching above for printer apps, and scratching my head how to figure out how to find a network printer, I recall mention of Avahi. But when I went to look for the app, I noted it was not automatically installed as part of LEAP-15.6 (and so I did not mention it). … I am thinking maybe I should add it … Possibly add it stating: “Avahi (network printer discovery)”.

EDIT - Just reading now - its not that simple ? Its a daemon/process.

Just thinking: I would not use “YaST Equivalencies”, but “YaST Modules Alternatives”. My gut feeling is that most users who are not native english speakers would rather search for “Alternatives” than “Equivalencies”.

Yes - that makes sense to me.

Of course, but I was referring to a ncurses version, like yast2

Stefan already explained, that there will be no Ncurses version of Myrlyn. Use zypper.

I added to the 2b(Printer) section the word " Avahi (network printer discovery) " … Thanks for the suggestion.
