alt+f2 not working in gnome with compiz HELPPP

alt+f2 not working in gnome with compiz HELPPP

it seems it was after I replaced emerald as my windows decorator, but removing it didn’t seem to help, and there is some help on the compiz troubleshooting but only for kde not GNOME,

Anyone?? I am sure this must be a common problem?

Thanks

I’ve run into this, but just upgraded my systems yesterday, so I haven’t
had a chance to look into it much yet.

Do you have the ability to use ALT+F4 to close apps or ALT+Space to open
the menu in the upper-left corner of the windows?

alt-f4 and alt-space work fine, and thanks for the quick response … Suse is seeming better all the time!!

In my case, I think I’ve tracked it down to having an older emerald
package installed - emerald doesn’t seem to actually be used any more for
window decorations - but having it run with compiz-manager caused a
conflict.

I’d seen this before with emerald and metacity running at the same time.
If you open a terminal and do:

ps ax | grep replace

What are the output results?

the results are,

ack@linux-bqo7:~> ps ax | grep replace
3197 ? S 0:04 emerald --replace

and sorry for the late response as at the time I didn’t know how to subscribe to a thread and my other problems were overwhelming

thanks

If you’re on 11.2, it seems the emerald package has been superceded - if
you are on 11.2, then remove that package and restart your window manager
(logout and back in should suffice) and that should take care of this for
you.

Yep removing emerald worked, but only after going into CCSM and restoring compiz’s window manager to default.

On a related note, do you know of any cool window manager (decorator), that is aero style, or 3-Dish, or clear and slick, Windows 7 (I dare say), is doing this well.

Gnome’s windows seem flat and dull.

and Thanks a lot, you forum moderators do an awesome job!!!lol!

Bye Bye Ubuntu’s edge, haha

just trying the rating system, giving it a 5, hmmmmI can’t seem to find how?

You might have a look at KDE4 - the default style there is decidedly Aero-
ish. Even though I’m a GNOME user, I find the KDE4 default interface
pretty slick looking.

OK I have rediscovered a solution to this, and keeping emerald.

Open CCSM and goto > General > Check off Gnome Compatability,

and presto, it works.

If you don’t have that option, I believe I got it by installing either compiz-gnome or compiz-extra-plugins,

and for KDE I fixed the alt+f2 problem by reinstalling compiz all from one repository (X11-XGL) and all the newest 0.8.2 version.
.
I hope this helps someone

Cool, glad to hear you got it working. I wouldn’t have thought to
disable Gnome compatibility.

Jim,

Actually it was to Enable Gnome Compatibility, to fix the problem, that is

and Thanks again Jim for your ongoing help. Perhaps one day I could become a moderator to give back…I like helping out.

That makes more sense to me - I had thought maybe since you were using
KDE that the option was conflicting.

There’s no requirement to be a moderator to help out - if you see
questions you know the answer to, feel free to jump in and lend a hand.
The benefit of an online forum like this is that it’s all about peers
helping each other.

How do you get "Moderator " status

I was asked to join the team - actually, I was the most recent one asked
(along with malcomlewis, I think he joined a day before I did), so all I
know is I got noticed in a good way.

To “get noticed in a good way”, I’d advise participating and make a
positive contribution. Even if you don’t get asked to be a moderator,
the positive contribution is very much appreciated.

Thanks, and I have now added positive remarks to about 15 threads, as this learning curve can be helpful for others in this same awkward phase, haha.
